Barbie, Girl, Isn’t It About Time That You Get A Modern Makeover?

Barbie, Girl, Isn’t It About Time That You Get A Modern Makeover?

Barbie, a plastic doll that has been a vital part of our growing up, is one such figure that could easily be found in many households (privileged, yes, because they were expensive, NGL). Some of us have our fondest memories of playing with Barbie dolls or some association irrespective of our gender or our preferences for toys and games. Barbies have been a part of the life of many kids of several generations. I literally used to collect Barbies, name them all, dress them up, and take care of them as a family member. Ah! The good old days. With the new live-action Barbie movie releasing soon, starring Margot Robbie, Ritu Arya, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, and more, it’s about time we explore our emotions toward Barbie and everything the brand stands for.

Was Barbie Ever Really A Good Influence?

There has been a very long and controversial debate about the way she was portrayed in our younger days. She was shown as a model that was destructive in terms of her presentation and image. She was presented for all those elements that are ‘anti-feminist’. Ironically, even the barbie song talks about undressing her without any mention of consent of any kind which is something that is repulsive in nature and represents a wrong example for us. Oh, how we wish we were better things, morals and ideals as kids.

The association of pink with girls and blue with boys is another stereotyping that the barbie world has made in our life. The idea of giving barbie to all girls as the best gift without actually asking them.

But, the worst thing that, they bring with them is standards. The association of beauty with the image of a barbie are some notions that have left a bad taste in our mouths and awful standard in our heads. The dolls have always been a beauty and are always decked. They are super-thin with the perfect figure, super white and always up to go to a party. She has always been someone who does not speak for herself or rise against the wrong. According to me, this is a very wrong representation of how a girl should be. This needed to go.

So, Will This Change Occur Anytime Soon?

Without a doubt. With education and awareness, one thing is definitely changing and that is our thinking along with this, slowly and steadily, the dolls are evolving and changing too. Mattel’s ‘I Can Be’ dolls are one such initiative that stands for the beautiful thought that one can be anything that their heart desires.

Another great move by the brand is releasing dolls with different ethnicities and backgrounds, this is a change in this positive direction. Our heart desires to see many more of these changes that showcase every type and form of representation. This will bring on body positivity, LGBTQIA+ representation, relatable moves and of course, activism because this is what a modern Barbie should really and truly stand for.

On an exciting note, a new Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling is expected to release on July 21, 2023. We wish to see a Barbie who is ready to take on the world, who is feminist in her nature and who aspires to difference in the world. We really wish to see Barbie with a modern twist. Please, please, please don’t show someone who wants a Malibu beach house or just likes to dress up and do nothing.

The modern Barbie is someone who wants to live her dream and stands for what she believes in. Launching a Barbie movie in the modern world should mean representing the notions that justify what barbie stands for and not showcase the old typical stereotypical behaviour with which no one of us can possibly resonate. Barbie needs a modern makeover, STAT!
