Asha Parekh Shames Indian Women Who Choose Western Clothes. But Erm, Didn’t She Wear Them Too?

If there is one thing that I would love old people to learn and accept is – the only constant is change. We often hear them cribbing about how we Indians are taking on western culture and forgetting our own. This is especially true when it comes to women’s clothing. A prime example of that would be veteran actor Asha Parekh who at The International Film Festival Of India (IFFI) spoke about how sad and hurt she is when she sees women of today wearing western clothes instead of traditional outfits.

Asha Parekh was one of the speakers at The International Film Festival Of India (IFFI) which was held in Panaji, Goa. During her speech, the actor spoke about how hurtful it is to see Indian women wearing western outfits instead of traditional ones – like salwar kameez, sarees, ghaghra choli, etc.

The veteran actor said that a lot has changed over the years and she really doesn’t recognise a lot of it since it is all westernised. Asha Parekha said, “Everthing has changed. The films that are being made, I do not know, we are so westernised. Gowns pehen ke wedding pe aa rahi hai ladkiyan. Arre bhaiya,, humari ghaghra choli, sarriyan aur salwar-kameez hai aap wo pehno na. Why don’t you wear those?”

Furthermore, Asha Parekh went ahead and said that Indian women want to wear whatever the heroines wear. As per reports, she said that women nowadays don’t care about “mote ho, ya jo, hum wahi pehenege” (whether they’re fat or not, they’ll wear what they see on screen). She further said it is hurtful to see women reject traditional clothing and follow the western culture.

It is funny that she is the one saying this. Especially when she is the one who used to wear “modern, westernised” clothes during the early Bollywood era. Here are some pictures of Asha Parekh that will drive the point home:

Shaming a woman and her choice to wear whatever she wears is just disrespectful and uncalled for. Especially because she herself is a woman and instead of supporting women’s choices, she is shaming them.
