‘Ms Marvel’ Actress Zenobia Shroff Says ‘Micro Aggression Needs to End Now’ After Western Publications Misname Her Nimra Bucha

South Asian movies and actors have finally begun getting their due global recognition. But the western press seems to have trouble recognising and naming brown people correctly because they happen to stereotype all brown people and assume they look the same. Recently, something similar happened with Ms Marvel actress Zenobia Shroff who plays the role of Iman Vellani aka Kamala Khan’s mother Muneeba on the show. She was clearly annoyed with the popular western publications The New York Times that misnamed her while writing an article on the show and Indie Wire has misspelt her name as well. She took to her Instagram to point the mistake out as well. Well, it is clearly time that they at least fact-check the names of people rightly!

Zenobia Shroff On Being Misnamed

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Zenobia has said that neither publication has reached out to her to accept their error. She also went on to say that she has been ‘misidentified and misrepresented’ several times in her career. She also went on mention the list of the misspelt names she has been called as well.

Taking to her Instagram, Zenobia Shroff shared the screenshot of the article that misnamed her and wrote in the caption, “Hey @nytimes Not all brown people look alike !!! it’s 2022 and while we appreciate your article I don’t appreciate you not doing your research. My name is Zenobia Shroff and I play #muneebakhan i am not @nimrabucha whom I do happen to adore but we are TWO different people. AS @kumailn once said hey I know it’s confusing there’s a lot of us but it’s time to wake up. The micro aggressions continues. End it NOW.”

Shroff also went on to point out how white people’s names are ‘never mispronounced’ nor are they ever ‘mislabelled’. She then added that brown people are ‘not interchangeable’.
