I Followed A Proper Skincare Routine For The First Time Ever, And It Changed My Definition Of Beauty

When it comes to skincare routines, I’m as clueless as one can be. I’ve never had a skincare routine and am always a bit on the edge about it. Why? Because I have extra sensitive skin and most of the products I’ve tried have done more damage than good – breakouts, boils, rashes, etc. But this time around, I really did want to build a routine and one that didn’t involve like ten different brands or products, because for beginners, that stuff can be quite tedious. Luckily, one of the perks of my work is getting to try new products. I was handed the newly launched Vitamin C range by Plum Goodness and it is with this range that I decided to embark on my skincare novice journey. Because isn’t it all about the inner glow these days? And I have to say, having a skincare routine changed my definition of beauty, and what it means to feel beautiful.

Products in my skincare routine

Every night, right before I go to sleep, I would wash my face with the Plum Vitamin C Foaming Face Wash. After which I sprayed my face with the Plum 1.5% Vitamin C Toner. After air-drying the toner (yep, a friend of mine told me to do that), I proceeded to pat my refreshed skin with the Plum 15% Vitamin C Face Serum. This was followed by the final step that seals it all in with the Plum 3% Vitamin C Moisturizer.

First Impressions:

Face wash is usually considered something quite basic, that even the laziest people who don’t do ‘skincare’ much, tend to use at least. I like a face wash that doesn’t dry my skin too much, even though I knew I was going to follow it up with hydrating serum and moisturiser.  The Plum one did just that, giving my skin a sense of freshness without making it dry. Now, I don’t exactly know what a toner is supposed to do (as I said, I’m a newbie in this department) but this one left behind a cool sensation. The serum I followed up with had a very sticky texture that I wasn’t too fond of.  It gave my face a very ‘wet’ look, if you know what I mean. However, my skin did end up feeling quite smooth after I massaged it in. Finally, the moisturiser, which I was most excited about, left my skin hydrated. The only downside to it was that it had no scent. I know that folks with sensitive skin are advised to stay as far away from fragranced products because it might inflame their skin. But your girl loves a nice refreshing scent! Nevertheless, after the entire routine, I felt as clean as one feels after a bath and my skin felt loved and taken care of.

What’s it like for a skincare novice to sustain a routine?

I diligently used the Plum Goodness range for a month. And I believe that they’re an ideal fit for those who have extra sensitive skin like me, who want to add a proper routine to their lives. What helped me stick to my routine was that there weren’t too many products, and the steps were easy to follow without requiring a genius to decode them.

The downside was that the glow that the brand promised was missing. No doubt that it left my skin hydrated and rejuvenated but other than that there were no changes that I could physically notice. However, the good news was that my breakout – comparatively – had reduced.

In all honesty, following a skincare routine was a good idea since it gave me a sense of self-care after an entire day of hard work and pushed me to remove some time off to relax a bit. In fact, it also changed the way I see beauty – for me this experience of having a routine made me realise that beauty has more to do with how it makes you feel rather than how you look on the outside. I don’t know whether my skin has started glowing more or whether it looks clearer but I do know that I feel more confident in it. I loved taking care of myself in a way that I haven’t done before – by doing something physically. The routine made me learn something new about myself and that doesn’t happen a lot with me (yes, I’m annoyingly self-aware).

PS: Won’t lie, after a couple of days, I did have a few ideas about starting a beauty channel but the sting of the facewash in my eyes quite literally and figuratively opened my eyes. So, maybe I won’t be turning into a beauty blogger anytime soon, but I will ensure to have a skincare routine in place.
