Estrogen plays a critical role in maintaining skin health. It helps to regulate collagen production, maintain skin hydration, and modulate immune function. As estrogen levels decline during menopause, the skin loses elasticity, thickness, and moisture. Collagen production slows down, leading to sagging, fine lines, and wrinkles. Moreover, the skin becomes more susceptible to environmental damage, such as UV radiation, pollution, and oxidative stress.

Other factors that contribute to menopausal skin changes include decreased sebum production, impaired wound healing, and altered melanin synthesis. These changes can result in dryness, itching, hyperpigmentation, and increased vulnerability to skin infections.

During menopause, the skin’s natural defence mechanisms against UV radiation are weakened, leading to increased susceptibility to sun damage. Therefore, it’s essential to use broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily, even on cloudy days or indoors. Look for products that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which provide physical protection against UV rays and have a lower risk of irritation than chemical filters.

Consider Retinoids

Retinoids, such as retinol, tretinoin, or adapalene, are vitamin A derivatives that have been shown to stimulate collagen production, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and improve skin texture and tone. According to a 2016 study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, a topical product containing retinol, niacinamide, and hexylresorcinol improved skin elasticity, firmness, and pigmentation in postmenopausal women after 12 weeks of use. However, retinoids can also cause skin irritation, redness, and flaking, especially if used too frequently or in high concentrations. Therefore, it’s advisable to start with a low strength product and gradually increase the frequency of use over time.
