How To Choose Skincare, Makeup Products That Are Safe For Pregnancy? 7 Things To Keep In Mind

Pregnancy is a special time for every woman and this is when they take every possible precaution to do right by their baby. Usually, pregnancy is associated with glowing skin and thick hair but hormones can be a pain. This is why it’s important for every pregnant woman to be careful with their skincare and makeup products during this time but at the same time, one has to be careful with what products they use on their skin during pregnancy. You don’t want toxins and chemicals being absorbed into your skin. This is why it’s essential to switch to clean beauty products during pregnancy.

How To Choose Pregnancy Safe Skincare And Makeup Products?

1. We women love our lipsticks but we also end up consuming our lipsticks. Ensure that you avoid any lipstick with ingredients like lead, Retinyl Palmitate and Tocopheryl Acetate as well as those with pigmenting chemicals and colourants. Instead go for a product with natural ingredients like shea butter, almond oil, jojoba oil, beeswax, honey, cocoa etc.

2. Avoid a face cream or moisturiser with anti-ageing ingredients like retinoids or those with salicylic acid, parabens, sodium lauryl sulphate etc. Go for creams free of harsh chemicals or stick to organic creams or home remedies. Pick fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products.

3. When picking a foundation, avoid one with retinoids and beta hydroxy acids and use organic products instead of ones that are free of preservatives and chemical pigments. The same goes for your concealers too. Also, make sure to check your concealer for PEGs aka Polyethylene and parabens.

4. Ideally it’s best to avoid wearing nail polish during pregnancy but if you’re keen on wearing it, avoid one with toluene as it can cause developmental defects in the foetus if inhaled. It can also cause nausea, dizziness, and skin and eye irritation. Opt for nail paints that don’t have a strong chemical smell and contain the least hazardous chemicals. But it’s best to limit the use of nail polish during this time.

5. Avoid using any eyeshadows that contain parabens and sodium sulfate as well as kajal with chemicals. Also, steer clear of mascara with formaldehyde, parabens, synthetic dyes and other toxic chemicals. Instead use eye makeup products like kajal and mascara with castor oil, almond oil and other natural ingredients. For your eyeshadow, pick something that is fragrance-free, BPA-free and parabens-free.

6. Sunscreen is an important skincare product but it usually comes with loads of chemicals and hormone-disrupting ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, homosalate and octocrylene. Try to use an organic sunscreen with clean ingredients.

7. Face powders usually have ingredients like retinoids, tetracycline and hydroquinone and it’s best to avoid these products during pregnancy. Replace your face powder with natural products or an organic one.
