Breakout From The Shame Around Acne, There Is Nothing Ugly About It!

I am currently 24 and whenever I look back at my younger self, there are a lot of times I am surprised by how easy it was to send me down a spiral of overthinking and insecurities. For example, I have always had a thick voice, to a degree that people speaking to me over call usually thought I was a man. For the longest time, I was insecure about something like my voice. And I did everything to sound more “feminine” until one day I woke up and realised that if someone cannot accept me for something as basic as my voice, then maybe I don’t need that person anymore. I bring this up because today is Acne Positivity Day and I need people to know that having acne-prone skin isn’t the end of the world and it doesn’t make you ugly.

One of the saddest things about the society and world we live in today is the fact that not only have we all been raised by our parents, family and people around us to nitpick at our appearance but we do the same for each other. And this results in people dropping unsolicited advice on each other about skincare, haircare, weight etc. But, are your comments about someone else’s skin or acne necessary? Maybe the person is comfortable with their skin; so why is it that many in India feel like it is their birthright to make a person self-conscious about their acne by giving unsolicited advice. A colleague of mine told me about an incident where she was shopping with her father and her father recommended some cream to the cashier for her acne as they were checking out. She called him out and apologised to the cashier on his behalf but you see what I mean?

Now my intention isn’t to vilify anyone who wants or is working on having acne-free skin. As I always say, “you do you, boo!” My issue here is with the fact that people who have acne are being made to feel like they NEED TO change their skin. What if they don’t want to? What if they have tried and it hasn’t worked out? It could be anything and regardless, it isn’t ours or anyone’s place to make them feel less than by giving them advice they didn’t ask for. People with acne are perfectly fine and are just as beautiful. There is nothing wrong with them and we as a society need to stop making them feel like there is.
