5 Things You Must Know Before You Book Your Bridal Makeup Artist!

So, your wedding is about 6 months away? That means it’s time to book your bridal makeup artist. Trust me, you don’t want to wait, because chances are… the artist might get booked by someone else. Plus, you want enough time to figure out what you want and whether your artist is the correct fit.

If you thought you just need to find and artist and book, well, it’s so much more! Here’s what you need to know before you finalise your makeup artist.

1. Know Your Artist

These days, it’s pretty important that your artist maintain a social media page, profile, or website with plenty of images to show their style and work. You can figure out what you like from the lot, or be in touch with him / her through social media by sending images of what you have in mind.

Also, ask if they do trials, and definitely do one at least a month before the wedding. It’s always different in person. Plus if you like the artist, but have minor changes, you can let them know beforehand.

2. Discuss the details of their team

Many a time, a makeup artist is just a makeup artist and not a saree draping expert or a hairstylist. In this case, request the artist to book you a team. Ask how many people he or she will bring, who does what, who is who, and once again, samples of their work.

Don’t be afraid to ask detailed questions about their team, because even if the artist can do all things, chances are they’ll bring someone to assist them, since a bridal look is a lot of work.

3. Talk About The Budget

Make sure to allot a budget for hair and makeup. Whatever your budget is, it should always be your second or third question, after you ask about availability and pictures of their work.

If an artist is slightly higher than your budget, don’t be afraid to discuss your looks with them, and ask for a payment breakdown. The breakdown may involve team members, products, or travel. You may be able to work around this in certain areas. For example, some artists may bring along a draping artist who charges Rs 2,000. If you aren’t too finicky about the draping, you could ask for someone cheaper, and request a family member to supervise.

That being said, if the artist just doesn’t fit your budget, don’t be upset; move on to the next one. Bargaining won’t get you anywhere, and the artist might get put off too.

4. Find Out The Pre-Wedding Day Routine

Your artist is an expert, after all. Ask for tips on skincare, which you can then double check with your dermatologist. Your artist may also request you to get extensions — regular ones and personalised ones are each available at various prices in the market. If you’re not sure about this, you can ask for no extensions or for the hair stylist to get their own. Again, feel free to ask questions on prices and how to go about this. You may want to sort this out way in advance.

Some makeup artists, like me, will work with a bride on personalised makeup classes prior to their wedding month. I also work with them on getting their hair coloured, picking tailor-made looks, nails, and so on. So, ask if your artist will be able to provide the same consulting service, especially if that’s important to you.

5. Get All Your Questions Answered

Now that you’ve been through the planning rigmarole, your big day or week has arrived. Make sure you send a reminder message and check in on last-minute details with your artist (Should I wash my hair? Do I bring anything? What time are we starting? etc…). Once he or she arrives, ask them the order of your get-ready process and approximate timings, so the schedule remains on time. While he or she is working, feel free to ask many questions and raise any concern you have, because THIS IS IT. Don’t be afraid to offend them.

#HauteHacks: Do not share your bridal artist, especially at the last minute when people ask to get things like small touch ups done. Find your own private space, turn on some music, and get into the groove. Let no one, except a handful of trusted girls… and mom, disturb you.
