The New York City mayor, who won people’s hearts with his creative campaigns before the election, created history by being the first Muslim mayor of NYC. Many thought that this year, he, along with his wife Rama Duwaji, would attend the Met Gala on May 4. As per media reports, Zohran Mamdani had made clear back in April that he would not be gracing the steps of the Met Gala 2026. On Monday, the day of the event, he shared photo portfolios of six behind-the-scenes workers for their contribution to the city’s fashion industry. He penned on X, “While the world’s eyes are on fashion’s biggest night, we’re turning ours to the garment, retail, and warehouse workers who keep the industry running. From true love found on the picket line to a free tailoring school out of a Brooklyn basement — meet the New Yorkers who make it all possible.” The NYC mayor also wrote a statement to the New York Times that the fashion industry is made possible by the thousands of workers behind the scenes including seamstresses, tailors, retail workers, and delivery drivers, whose immense talent and dedication deserve to be celebrated.

In case you don’t know, this year’s Met Gala’s theme was Costume Art and the official dress code was “Fashion Is Art.” Although many were looking forward to seeing Zohran Mamdani on the red carpet, people were delighted to witness their favourite desi stars at the event.
