In today’s world, society often finds ways to criticise women no matter what they do. If they wear modern clothes, people question their character. If they wear traditional sarees, they get mocked for being backward. Recently, an online teacher named Punam Devi, known for her YouTube channel Math by Punam Mam, has become the target of unnecessary trolling. Her simple and clear teaching videos for Class 12 students gained attention, but sadly for all the wrong reasons. Many people online made fun of her for wearing a saree and her way of speaking.
Punam Devi was born and raised in a small village in rural Uttar Pradesh. She faced many tough challenges in life. Despite these difficulties, she worked hard and created a successful career teaching Physics, Chemistry, and Maths to thousands of students. She explains lessons mainly in Hindi because most of her students come from similar Hindi-medium backgrounds. Instead of appreciating her effort and teaching skills, many netizens focused only on her looks.
Indian society pressures women to wear traditional clothes rather than Western clothes, but when a woman wears traditional clothes while teaching online, the very same people who want to see women in traditional attire start trolling her.

They commented on her saree, skin tone, village roots, and choice of language. Some laughed at her for teaching science in Hindi. Others seemed shocked that a woman in traditional clothes could explain difficult topics so well. Even some comments that looked like praise felt insulting, as they suggested surprise that a rural woman could be smart and successful.
This reaction shows a deeper problem in society. Many people link intelligence and success only with English, city life, western clothes, and fair skin. Traditional things like sarees, Hindi, and village backgrounds are wrongly seen as signs of less knowledge.
Why should the clothes a woman wears decide how smart she is? Why should her language or background reduce her value as a teacher? Punam Devi’s story proves that real talent and hard work matter more than anyone’s appearance. Society needs to change its narrow thinking and start respecting women for their abilities.
