UN Chief Proposes A Strong Plan For Governments To End Violence Against Women, Says “Let’s Declare We’re Feminists”

The Shraddha Walker murder case has sent shock waves in the country. Her brutal murder by Aaftab Ameen Poonawala, who was her live-in partner has become a nightmare for each one of us. The constant updates, in this case, are making it even more disturbing. And amidst this, the United Nations Chief, Antonio Guterres has given a shocking detail regarding the rate of violence against women by their partners and even family members. The UN Chief gave out some startling statistics on this and also put forth a plan of action for the governments.

Crimes Against Women Family

Antonio Guterres, called violence against women, the most “pervasive” kind of human rights violation in the world. He also said that every 11 minutes, a woman or girl is killed by her partner or family member. Women also face excessive verbal and physical abuse due to factors like economic problems and even the Pandemic. Antonio Guterres highlighted that abuse, harassment and violence are major hindrances to women’s participation in the world’s economy and growth.

The UN Chief also proposed a strict action plan for the governments to implement and bring an end to violence against women. He asked the governments to involve the civic-society organisations and build a strong base, so when actions and decisions are made, they are efficiently implemented too, as per the news. In the action plans, he also requested governments to increase the funding to women’s rights organisations by 50 percent by 2026, and ask to proudly declare themselves “Feminists”. He also highlighted this year’s theme for International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women which is UNITE to end violence against women.
