This Is How The Church Will Choose Its Next Leader After The Demise Of Pope Francis

The world mourns the loss of Pope Francis as the 88-year-old died this morning after suffering from a complex respiratory infection. The pope served as the leader of the Catholic Church for 12 years and was the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church. During his papacy, the pope opened key roles for women and also implemented various progressive policies through landmark rulings. As political leaders and the public offer their condolences, one question lingers in everyone’s mind: What comes next?

What Happens After The Pope’s Death?

Pope Francis will be laid to rest in St Peter’s Basilica, a church near the Vatican, in a simple wooden coffin. Mourners will be welcome to come and pay their respects to the late Pope. He will also be the first Pope in more than a century to be buried outside the Vatican city.

How Is The New Pope Elected

If you’ve seen the Oscar nominated movie, Conclave- you might have some idea how this procedure goes. The church’s most senior officials also known as the College of Cardinals get summoned  to participate in an election or conclave. The election takes place after 15-20 days from the Popes’ death in order to allocate adequate time for mourning.

What Happens In The Conclave?

Voting is held by a system of secret ballots with the cardinals writing the names of their preferred candidates. To win the election, a candidate must acquire two thirds of the majority. If a majority is not achieved all the ballots are burnt and the elections are re-held. Black smoke is also seen coming out of the Sistine chapel signaling that the voting will continue. Once majority is gained, the senior cardinal reveals the decision by announcing “Habemus Papam” – Latin for “we have a Pope”.

Who Can Become The Next Pope?

While there is no way to know who it will be until election takes place and the new Pope is officially declared. Predictions are being made that an Italian candidate might get elected as of the 266 popes chosen till date, 217 have been from Italy.
