I believe medicine is a profession that allows no room for errors to be made. Because once a mistake is made, its consequences get so severe that it is rare that a patient recovers from it. Doctors are considered to be equal to gods because they give a second life to their patients and only gods are deemed capable enough to do this miracle. But just imagine when the hands that are supposed to save your life end up taking it. That, too, by mistake. A similar case has taken place in Tamil Nadu after a 17-year-old girl lost her life after the doctors make a huge blunder during her leg surgery.
As per reports, the deceased’s name is R Priya, a 17-year-old girl footballer who passed away after the doctors made a mistake while operating on her leg. She was undergoing surgery for a ligament tear at the Periyar Nagar Government Peripheral Hospital. Also, she was undergoing arthroscopy, which is a minimally invasive type of surgery.
As per a statement from a health department official, R Priya started experiencing immense pain as the doctors had tied the compression bandage way too tightly. This caused more damage to the blood vessels and the blood flow. On the same day, R Priya had to be shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) as her leg had to be amputated.
Because Priya’s blood flow was severely affected, her liver, heart and kidney were damaged as well. The official informed that this was a result of the negligence on the part of the doctors who performed the ligament tear surgery.
Priya breathed her last on November 15, 2022, at 7.15 AM. Two doctors, Dr A Paul Ram Sankar, who is the assistant professor in the orthopaedics department and Dr K Somasundar, the casualty medical officer have been suspended due to their negligence. The Tamil Nadu government has offered a “compensation” of Rs 10 lakhs and a government job to one of Priya’s three brothers.

Priya’s family members are demanding strict action against the doctors and protesting against them, too.
It was bad enough for the aspiring footballer that she had to lose her leg but the trauma that her family now faces is gut-wrenching. We hope the doctors are severely punished.
