Several interesting scientific researches are happening, and well, if you are interested in knowing about them, then this article is for you. In one of the recent findings, it was revealed that a fossil that for the longest time was believed to be of the world’s oldest octopus is actually not an octopus. The scientists have revealed that the 300-million-year-old fossil belongs to another animal, and here’s what the research discovered. Read on.

If Not Octopus, Then What?

A 300-million-year-old fossil was found at the Mazon Creek site, south of Chicago, Illinois. It was named Pohlsepia Mazonensis. Initially, it was beleived to be the world’s oldest Octopus, but recently, the scientists discovered that it’s actually not true. As per a study in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the fossil belonged to an animal related to a modern nautilus. It has tentacles and an external shell.

As per CNN, the lead author of the study, Thomas Clements, revealed that many new analytical techniques were used to study and research the hidden anatomical characteristics present in the rock, and that’s how they discovered that it was an octopus, but a decomposed version of a nautiloid. The nautiloid was a relative of the modern nautilus. The author further revealed that the fossil decomposed for weeks before it was buried, and therefore it took the shape like Octopus. As per the report, Clements also credited the power of new technology in scientific research. Revealing more about the research, he said that teeth led them to discover it was not an octopus.
