Olympic wrestler Sakshi Malik has made shocking revelations, claiming that BJP leader Babita Phogat played a significant role in instigating the protest against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Sakshi Malik alleges that Phogat had personal ambitions to take over as the WFI president, motivating her to encourage the wrestlers to protest, India Today reported. This claim has added a surprising twist to the already controversial situation surrounding the WFI and its leadership.
Sakshi Malika Claims Babita Phogat Wanted To Become WFI Chief
In a recent interview with India Today TV, Sakshi Malik shared that Babita Phogat gathered several wrestlers for a meeting, urging them to stand up against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Malik asserts that Phogat’s primary motivation for pushing the protest was her desire to replace Singh as the WFI president. Phogat, a well-known wrestler and politician, allegedly had her own agenda, which Malik believes fueled her involvement in the protests.
Sakshi Malik also addressed rumors that the Congress party had backed their protest, clarifying that the claim was false. Instead, she revealed that two BJP leaders Babita Phogat and Tirath Rana were instrumental in helping the wrestlers secure permission to protest in Haryana. Malik emphasized that while the protests were not entirely driven by Phogat’s ambitions, her influence was significant in getting them started.
More Details On Wrestlers Protest
The protests against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh began when prominent wrestlers like Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and Vinesh Phogat accused the former WFI chief of sexually harassing female athletes during his tenure. The allegations rocked the Indian sports community, leading to widespread outrage and calls for accountability within the federation. Malik, who was one of the leading faces of the protest, revealed that divisions began to appear when people close to Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat became influenced by greed, according to a PTI report.
The protest against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh gained momentum as wrestlers marched toward the newly inaugurated Parliament building in May 2023. However, the march was halted by the police, and the protest eventually lost steam. Despite the protests, the case against Singh is still being heard in a Delhi court.
In the aftermath of the protest, both Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat joined the Congress party ahead of the Haryana assembly elections. Vinesh contested and won from the Julana constituency, while Bajrang was appointed head of the party’s national farmers’ unit. Malik, meanwhile, distanced herself from the political move, focusing on her sporting career.
