Amid the internet reacting to Pranit More and the Rs 370 Biryani date story, another standup comedian, Madhur Virli, went viral for making a crass and disturbing r*pe joke. He, too, had to face the wrath of the internet over what he had to say. Now reacting to the criticism, Madhur has apologised, stating that after uploading the clip, he understood how wrong it was, and he took it down after that. Read on to know what he mentioned in his apology.
Madhur Virli Apologises After R*pe Joke Goes Viral
Madhur Virli took to his YouTube channel and shared an apology post stating that the viral clip of him being circulated is from a performance that he did around two years ago. The comedian shared that soon after performing that bit, he understood how wrong it was and took it down at that time, long before the clip started circulating again recently. Further, Madhur wrote, believing that comedy can question ideas and engage with difficult subjects but certain topics require sensitivity, context and informed discretion. The comedian shared that when an attempt falls short, the only honest thing to do is acknowledge it, apologise and do better and this was one of those moments for him. He ended the statement saying that he had deactivated his Instagram account around six months ago, adding that he was “genuinely sorry.”
What Did He Joke About R*pe?
In one of Madhur Virli’s previous stand-up shows, he made a disturbing joke about r*pe cases. He stated that out of 10 r*pe cases, nine only involve r*pe, whereas one includes murder as well. The comedian stated that in such a case, the victim might ask the r*pist about “cuddling”, which would seemingly prompt him to murder her. After this joke, even the audience could be heard laughing at it. When this clip started circulating, people were quick to call out him and Pranit More together.
Sure, as per Madhur Virli’s apology, he had taken down the clip of the joke, but that does not change the fact that this is an inappropriate topic to joke about in the first place. What remains disturbing is that someone thought making such a lewd joke would be okay to begin with.
