In recent events, Maharashtra’s Lohagad Fort is yet again in the news after a viral video has yet again divided the internet over tourists behaviour at heritage sites. The clip was taken by a local man who was seen confronting a group of tourists who are reportedly from Delhi for smoking cigarettes on the location. This has raised concerns over their actions and here’s all you need to know about the controversy.

Man Confronts Tourists At Lohagad Fort

The 1-minute-46-second video showed the man confronting the tourists for smoking at Maharashtra’s Lohagad Fort and even questioned about who allowed them to do so. To this, the group replied stating that they did not know the rules and alleged that there was also no signboard prohibiting smoking, making the local man even angrier. He further asked them if they would smoke inside a temple too because the fort was like a temple to him. In the end of the video, the man was seen warning the tourists that he can even file a police complaint and asked them to hand him their cigarettes. It is important to note that the authenticity and date of the video are not yet verified, but has sparked major debate on respecting historical monuments.

As per reports, even though the tourists claim to be unaware about the rules at historic sites, the ASI rules are already laid down to protect these monuments. Several rules including the consumption of ghutka, pan masala, cigarettes, and alcohol is prohibited inside to visitors not being allowed to carry lighters, matches, or other inflammable materials being banned. One is also not allowed to deface the carved names or cause damage while avoiding flying drones or using tripods without permission. Authorities often stress that the historical monuments must not be treated as picnic sites and that protecting their dignity is important.

If one if found breaking any of these rules, they would face penalties including a fine of Rs 1 Lakh and an imprisonment of up to two years.
