Actress Gina Lollobrigida, who was one of the biggest stars of European cinema, passed at the age of 95 in Rome. The news of Loolobrigida’s demise was confirmed by her family and her grandnephew, Francesco Lollobrigida, who is the Italian Minister of Agriculture. 

Who Was Italian Star Gina Lollobrigida?

The late actress Gina Lollobrigida was born on July 4, 1927, in Lazio. Her father was a furniture manufacturer and Gina spent her teen life avoiding wartime bombing raids. She studied sculpture at Rome’s Academy of Fine Arts. After that, a talent scout offered her an audition at the largest film studio in Europe.

Before appearing in films, Gina Lollobrigida did some modelling and won several beauty pageants. The 1953 film Beat the Devil was her first widely-seen English-language movie. She starred in many blockbuster films and served on the jury of the 8th Moscow International Film Festival in the year 1973. However, her career as an actress slowed down in the 1970s.

She Was Also A Photojournalist

By the end of the 1970s, Lollobrigida became a successful photojournalist. Her exclusive interview with Fidel Castro, the Communist Cuban leader became the highlight of her second career.

Her Political Career

In 1999, Gina Lollobrigida ran for the European Parliament as a candidate for The Democrats but was unsuccessful.

She also attempted to win a seat in the Senate of the Republic in the 2022 Italian general election as a candidate for the Sovereign and Popular Italy (ISP) but was defeated. Before the election, she had mentioned Mahatma Gandhi and his way of doing things inspired her a lot and she also claimed the have known Indira Gandhi.

She was truly one of the brightest stars of the film industry, may her soul rest in peace.
