A group of hackers identifying themselves as NullBulge and claiming to be hacktivists announced a conspicuous hacking forum last Friday. The hacktivist group declared that they had successfully acquired 1.1 terabytes of data originating from Disney’s internal communication channel, Slack. The stolen data includes files and messages from 10,000 channels. Well, if you are wondering, how did the hackers manage to get the data? Here’s an explanation of the entire situation.

How Did The Hackers Obtain Confidential Disney Data?

So, this group, identifying themselves by the name Nullbulge, came forward and said they were the ones responsible for the leak. They claimed to have accessed Disney’s Slack messaging data by using a Disney employee’s compromised computer. On the social media platform X (former Twitter), the hacktivists group mentioned that they took everything they could get their hands on and further added about obtaining 1.1 terabytes of files and chat messages from around 10,000 confidential Disney Slack channels. Furthermore, the stolen data allegedly also includes code, images, login credentials, and information about Disney’s unreleased projects. In response to this concerning situation, Disney has officially stated to The Wall Street Journal that they are currently investigating the matter.

Moreover, on July 12, before Disney’s Slack data was leaked, the hacker group Nullbulge hinted that they had stolen material. According to The Wall Street Journal, the stolen data contained confidential Disney information about recruitment and website maintenance. Furthermore, the leaked data also includes internal conversations about software development and employee programmes for the year 2019. Exclusive data about a video game’s sequel and an upcoming gaming collaboration has started surfacing on the internet.

Why Did They Do This?

According to The WSJ, Nullbulge claims to protect artists’ rights and remuneration. The reason the hackers targeted Disney was because of how they handled their artists’s contracts and their approach towards artificial intelligence. It is disregarding the consumers, said the group. With the increased use of AI by Disney, it poses a threat to the careers of artists. Earlier, Disney was also criticised for using AI for producing the credits for the series Secret Invasion on Disney Plus Hotstar.
