Twitter Calls Out Delhi HC For Saying Wife Wanting To Live Away From In-Laws Is Cruelty. Women Having To Leave Parents Is Not?
Remarks reek of patriarchy

From a very young age, women are taught to sacrifice many things in their lives, and the biggest one is their parents. The idea that a woman will have to leave her own house and accept her in-laws after marriage is something that we have all heard while growing up. And for some reason that has always been considered to be a normal practice. However, now that women are choosing to live separately from their in-laws, the same society seems to have been a little bothered by it. And in fact, the court of justice also sees it as an act of cruelty. Quite strange and wrong isn’t it?
Rituparna Chatterjee, a writer who is famous by the name of Masala Bai on Twitter slammed a very problematic statement by the Delhi High Court. Recently, the Delhi Court called a wife’s adamant decision to stay away from her in-laws an act of cruelty. Rituparna Chatterjee questioned the practice of women being forced to stay away from their own parents who have fed and raised them all along. The writer questioned society’s hypocrisy in setting boundaries and rules for a woman to their liking. She also wrote that if a woman’s decision to stay away from their in-laws is considered an act of cruelty then the society forcing them to stay away from the parents should also be considered the same. Rituparna Chatterjee further expressed her shock in this statement coming from the court of law.
Oh nice. Since this sets precedent, can women claim cruelty for being forced to live apart from the parents who raised and cared for them all their lives? If not, why not? Our courts are a revelation everyday. https://t.co/gRNNyD5uz3

This particular statement was passed during a case addressed by the two-judge bench of Justice Suresh Kumar Kai and Justice Neena Bansal Krishna. The petitioner had filmed this case after his divorce plea was rejected by a family court. The man was seeking a divorce on the grounds that his wife was disrespectful towards the elders and was forcing him to stay with him. During the trial, the bench also observed that in India a woman cannot ask her husband to separate from his family. The bench also called the act torturous for the husband, as per the reports.
Here’s how Twitter reacted-
act of cruelty, and so husband gets a divorce and wife gets an alimony
Indeed a revelation
And lets not even start to count the acts of husband that are considered cruel.

Also , women have the 'choice' amd know they have to live in husband family before marriage . But wife doesn't demand separate living before marriage but start demanding & put pressure after marriage only .

Things like this should be talked about before getting married. Why create issues after?

Well, it is true that in our Indian culture, it is always the wife who leaves her own home behind. But is this practice right or justified only because this has been in our culture for a very long time? The court stated that a man has his duties as a son, and so does a woman. Twitter thinks that the statements made by the court are very much gender biased and reflect the regressive ideas that continue to exist on various levels. And it is true!
