Doctor Proposes Using Brain Dead Women For Surrogacy And Twitter Is Rightfully Livid

Are women considered to be some kind of baby-producing machine? I mean there are times when we come across such absurd and nonsensical statements that just make us furious. Recently, a paper published by the Colombian Medical College sparked serious controversy around one of the suggestions made by the doctors, and we don’t see how it would not have created this scene. It was suggested that women who are brain-dead should be used as surrogate for couples who are unable to have their own babies.

The paper published by the Colombian Medical College was a journal of Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics. In this journal, one of the doctors suggested that women who are brain dead should be kept alive and used for giving birth to babies for a woman who is unable to conceive. The doctor who suggested this was Professor Anna Smajdor who hails from Norway and teaches Practical Philosophy at the University of Oslo. The paper majorly focuses on the details and approaches of gestational donations. And in this, the doctor talked about brain-dead women being used for surrogacy purposes.

This statement was bound to give rise to severe backlash. As per the news, it is also reported that the Colombian Medical College has been asked to issue an apology for publishing a paper with this absurd and problematic suggestion.

Here is how Twitter reacted to this suggestion.

I mean, after learning about this, the only question that struck me was, are women considered to just be some kind of object? It is such an insensitive remark to come from a professor. Did they forget that using a woman’s body for surrogacy requires her consent as well? And well, how did a medical institute go ahead and approve the paper which had this statement in it, the backlash was certainly not an unexpected one in this case.
