Ex-Editor Of Tehelka Tarun Tejpal Gets 10 Years Imprisonment In R*pe Case

The news made headlines on Thursday when the Bombay High Court convicted the former Editor of Tehelka, Tarun Tejpal, in the r*pe case of his former junior colleague. The HC overruled a judgement by the local court which had acquitted the accused in the matter. The bench has now delivered the punishment for Tarun Tejpal, who had pleaded with the court for some ‘leniency ‘.

Bombay HC Pronounces Punishment For Tarun Tejpal

The Bombay High Court bench presided over by Justices Dr Neela Gokhale and Amit Jamsandekar heard the trial against Tarun Tejpal, a renowned journalist accused of r*ping his former junior colleague in Goa, in 2013. The bench found him guilty under several IPC sections and, as per the latest updates on the same, the Bombay HC pronounced the punishment under various IPC sections. The convict was imposed a fine of ₹5 lakh under Section 376(2)(f). Under Section 376(2)(k), the court awarded 10 years of imprisonment.

Under Section 354, the Court sentenced Tarun Tejpal to one year of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000. Under Section 354A, the Court pronounced a year of rigorous imprisonment and a fine. Under Section 354B, the Court awarded 3 years of imprisonment and a Rs 3,000 fine.

What Was The Crime

Tarun Tejpal was accused of s*xual assaulting a former junior colleague twice in a row. The incident reportedly happened during the ThinkFest event in Goa in November 2013. The convict had pleaded for leniency, considering his age and that he was a victim. However, the Solicitor General Of India, Tushar Mehta, opposed the plea and requested the bench to set a strong example that reminded men that a girl’s no is no!
