10 Relationship Rules For Couples In Live-In Relationships

Living together without the stamp of marriage is no easy feat. It comes with its own set of responsibilities, and it can make or break your relationship. If you play your cards right, you can become stronger as a couple. But, if you make mistakes, then having a home together can be your ticket to hell named heartbreak!

If you don’t want to land there simply because you made some rookie mistakes, here are some rules you should keep in mind.

1. Learn each other’s non-verbal cues

You may think that you know someone you’ve been dating simply because you’ve had multiple dinners and maybe even some vacations together. But, you never truly get to know someone well enough unless you’ve lived with them. They say 80% of our communication happens non-verbally, that is through body language, facial expressions and tone and pitch. This is what you learn when you live with someone. So, pay attention!

2. Be open to changing your habits for the better

All of us have bad habits. Like throwing laundry on the floor instead of in the laundry bag! If your partner points out such “quirks,” and urges you to do better, be open to it. After all, the best relationships are those that make our lives and us, as people, better!

4. Build relationships with each other’s family

For all intents and purposes, you and your partner are family. You may not be married yet, or never, but extend respect to each other’s families as an expression of respect to each other.

5. Keep each other informed about things

Even the little things like when you’ll be home, or if you have friends visiting, or if groceries are running short. Your behaviour impacts your partner, so it’s important that you keep them in the loop.

6. Be patient

Give yourself time to get used to each other and find your rhythm. You are living with a new person even if you may have known each other for a while, and it will take some getting used to. This also applies as you progress through your relationship, and face new challenges together.

7. Decorate together!

One person should not have monopoly over what a shared home looks like. Your house should reflect both your personalities, and the love you have.

8. Don’t take everything personally

You may be sharing a home together, but you still have individual lives (or, should), and moods. Not everything your partner goes through is about you. As roommates, though, you will witness all of each other’s ups and downs. Learn to tell the difference between when it’s about you, and when it’s not.

9. Be honest about your finances

Your finances are combined at least to the extent that both of you contribute to rent and other bills. Be upfront about how much you have, and how much you are comfortable spending.

10. Save…

Because no matter what your living situation is, you must always save money!
