Evil Dead Burn Review: An Extremely Gore Addition To The Franchise That Doesn’t Impress With Its Story!

Horror movies are so back, and in the last few months, we have seen a good lineup in this genre. And this week isn’t disappointing for the horror fans either because Evil Dead Burn is hitting theatres on Friday, July 10. The film, directed by Sébastien Vaniček, stars Hunter Doohan, Luciane Buchanan, Tandi Wright and George Pullar, among others. It is a new addition to the Evil Dead franchise. However, it comes with a fresh story, new conflicts and is kinda a woke version of horror films. If you are wondering whether to watch it or skip, here’s a fair review that might help you decide. Read on.

Plot

The film begins with the cursed lake, as usual. The demon possesses Will (George Pullar). A little background on him, Will owns a restaurant and is an abusive husband to Thya (Luciane Buchanan). He has a younger brother, Joseph, parents, and a grandmother. Most of the film takes place in their old house, where the demon tortures the family, brutally kills some, and all this just to hunt a dagger. Through Joseph, we also learn that his grandfather was a historian and he took an interest in ghosts/demons. What happens in the end is for you to watch!

Story

Evil Dead Burn’s story is not its greatest strength. Unfortunately, the film, co-written by Sebastien Vanicek and Florent Bernand, does not delve into exploring the themes at hand. What bothers me the most is the story behind the dagger, the primary motive of the demon’s return. The film focuses little on building a substantial narrative around the dagger, the importance and power it holds. The flashbacks and bits in which some history of the grandfather and the dagger’s story is provided to us are not very convincing. Unlike other horror movies, Evil Dead Burn does not invest enough time to frame a solid story around the myths.

Will and Thya’s conflict also becomes a major plot point in the narrative, through which the film tries to focus on the issues of domestic violence, mental health and abuse. But this part of the story does not hit hard because flashbacks are not enough to understand the pain that Thya undergoes due to an abusive relationship. This ultimately becomes one of the major reasons why the climax is not very rewarding.

Now, when I think about it in hindsight, what has stayed with me is the gore and violence in the film!

Too Gore, Bloodshed Violence

If you are a fan of gore, then Evil Dead Burn is for you. Not the story, but the film is more focused on giving us many eww moments. A few that are still fresh in my memory. Not that I really enjoyed them, and know that I, too, am okay with all the mindless cutting and burning of the people in such horror films. But Evil Dead Burn did not align its violence and gore with the narrative. You know how the lead character is killing the demon in the final moments, a sudden surge of emotion takes place, yes, that exact feeling was lost in the film.

Evil Dead Burn does have a few jumpscares, but I’d would still not put it into the “very horror” category.

Characters

For the most part, I was convinced that the film does not have a saviour to end the horrors of the demon. And TBH, I was hardly rooting for any characters in this one. But eventually, the film follows the formulaic narrative with its character. The motive behind Thya and Will was an interesting and fresh take, but it was not woven into the film satisfactorily. It needed more attention and depth, especially if an issue like domestic abuse is in place.

Verdict

Evil Dead Burn is not a horror film that I will be talking about much because it was a huge letdown in terms of the story and horror. But as far as the gore and violence go, it ticks the box quite right. Are you watching it?
