‘Code Name: Tiranga’ Review: Parineeti Chopra As The “Best Man” On The Mission Gives You Unforgettable Action Sequences But The Dragged Storyline Fails To Impress!

For a long time now, action films have always been about “Heroes”. Whether it is about killing a terrorist or saving the world from a disaster, Bollywood has always shown this from the perspective of a male actor. Well, I am sure we all have at least once watched an action-packed drama where the hero, most likely in the role of a RAW agent is on a covert mission and has put his heart and soul into finding that one terrorist who was involved in an attack on the country. This type of plot will be very relatable for you, and let me guess, some movies actually crossed your mind while reading this, well, then Code Name: Tiranga, starring Parineeti Chopra and directed by Ribhu Dasgupta also fits the same picture, but with some differences that actually set this movie apart from being the obvious patriotic action drama. Sadly, the storytelling is dragged to an extent that you will also start feeling restless. Brighter side though that here the “best man” for the mission is actually a woman. And now goes the rest!

Good And Bad Of The Plot

So, you are set with your popcorn and a cold drink, to witness the action drama but wait, the movie starts with a nice long romantic song and a love angle. Disappointed? No, that will be too early to judge. So Code Name: Tiranga’s plot starts with first introducing us to the characters of Durga Singh, played by Parineeti Chopra, and Dr. Mirza Ali, played by Harrdy Sandhu. In the first few minutes of the film, we are shown how love blossoms between these two characters when they first meet in Afghanistan. Parineeti’s character introduces herself to Dr. Mirza as a journalist when in reality she turns out to be a raw agent. This sudden revelation will be a shock for Dr. Mirza, not us because the trailer had already prepared us for that. As the film progresses, the story becomes more complex, and so does Durga Singh’s life as a RAW agent because she has been given the responsibility of finding out one of the most wanted terrorists Khalid Omar, played by Sharad Kelkar.

The plot takes us through a series of events and focuses majorly on Durga Singh’s chase first behind the rogue RAW agent Bakshi, played by Dibyendu Bhattacharya, and then the main antagonist Khalid Omar. The plot has been weaved in a way that will connect all the dots at the end of the film, and lead to some unexpected turn of events in this whole chase game, which according to me was really interesting, and another point that set Code Name: Tiranga to be a different experience for me as an audience. However, some scenes in the plot were unnecessarily dragged, especially the emotional scenes and well, even the forced suspense events in the film. And this was the major drawback in the screenplay that will make the audience impatience and drowsy.

Characters And Their Contribution

Parineeti Chopra plays the lead role in Code Name: Tiranga and honestly it was refreshing to see an actress shouldering the responsibilities of chasing down a wanted criminal. The RAW agent, Durga Singh who the actress plays in the film, is bold and fierce but also has her moments of weakness, and the biggest one was a tragic incident that happens related to her love interest Dr. Mirza. There is no other background that has been given about this character but well, Parineeti Chopra’s action sequences do add the needed masala to the film.

Harrdy Sandhu as Dr. Mirza Ali has played the part of a good supporting character in Code Name: Tiranga. Other than that, this character has not been really given any other development whatsoever. Talking about the antagonist in the film, Khalid Omar, played by Sharad Kelkar, expect a cliched character of a terrorist, only to see that this one has a love life too. One major loss in his life will increase his hunger to kill Durga Singh. Sharad Kelkar has done justice to his role and has given whatever his role was asked to serve in the film, but will leave you with no major impact.

Apart from the roles, Code Name: Tiranga also features well-known actors like  Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Rajit Kapoor, Shishir Sharma, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, and Deesh Mariwala. All the actors have showcased their acting skills well but sadly they have been seen in such kinds of roles before too. Especially, Shishir Sharma who is a Pakistani agent will very much remind you of his character from Raazi, except that here he is in a negative role.

Actions Sequences

Well, this deserves a special mention in the movie because the action scenes were really good. It was not stretched, especially the hand-to-hand fights. There is a firing sequence towards the end of the movie that is inspired by video games, and that experiment was quite a fresh angle in the action-packed film.

Script Was A Way Too Stretched!

Okay, so firstly, the plot of Code Name: Tiranga might seem like a usual one, where there is a patriotic feeling in the main character who sets on a journey alone to fight all the terrorists who come along the way just to reach that one wanted man. But the fact that little details have been given importance and they have weaved it together at the end of the film is noteworthy. Details that you will miss from the movie’s beginning will actually have relevance in the end, so look out for details, please! But most of the scenes were not really necessary in the film and could be simply edited and cut short. Particularly, love scenes just break the seriousness of the film and also do not help to give any emotions to the audience.

Songs

The album for Code Name: Tiranga has been composed by Jaidev Kumar. The very first romantic song ‘Ki Kariye’, sung by Harrdy Sandhu and Sakshi Holkar is really soothing to the ears, so you can come back to this music again. During the film, you might forget about it. ‘Dumadum Mast Kalandar’has been recreated in the film, and well nothing ever competes with the original.

Final Verdict

I was glad to see such a film having a female protagonist, for me that would the one thing to motivate me for this film. To see Paineeti perform action sequences and carry out a mission that always had a male actor in the picture, even on minds, Code Name: Tiranga will break it. However, the fact that the film is way too stretched and also might seem forced at some points is the major setback in the film. The emotions failed to come across to me as an audience, and for me, this was the fault on the part of the writing because as an audience I was being served so much at once that I really forgot to connect with the film. I just watched the film as a simple action drama. All in all, you can watch this film for the efforts put in by Parineeti Chopra or simply if you like such films, with little expectation that it might serve you anything extra or different.  The film will hit the theatres on October 14, 2022.
