You’re Supposed To Clean Your Earphones THIS Often?!

January 24, 2017 | by Tatiana Dias

A pair of earphones is a must-have accessory for all of us nowadays — it’s probably more of a necessity than a watch or even your wedding ring (yes, it is…you know that). If, by chance, you leave your headphones behind, you are forced into eavesdropping on a gossip session between two pesky aunties on the train. This might sound entertaining, but trust me, you don’t want to know who Sharma-ji’s daughter is not being ladylike with, especially when you’re trying to get some shuteye. Earphones are our buddies for most of the day, through our commute, at work, at home — pretty much everywhere, and since they’re literally in our faces constantly, we need to make sure they’re utterly hygienic.

With that being said, unless you’re a mini-germaphobe, like our Social Media Manager Farozan Dossani (she claims she cleans her buds at least thrice a week), YOU probably don’t clean your ear trinkets as much as you’re supposed to, do you? Well, you must polish them up at least once a week and here’s why! It’s not the wax you need to worry about, it’s the germs that collect onto the wax when the buds are exposed to your bag, purse, pocket etc! The bacteria then transfers during use and, since the ear pieces create heat, these little germ friends get trapped and basically party it out in your ear, causing a really bad infection.

For those of you who can toss away those silicon covers, then go ahead and change them as often as you can. But the rest of you who’s stuck with just the one, here’s how you can clean your earbuds — and do it AT LEAST once every week.

By using a gentle cleanser, like a mix of dishwashing soap and warm water, gently dip a cloth into the soapy mix. Making sure the cloth isn’t soaked, and wipe the ear pieces slowly, removing all dirt and residue.

For the inner part of the tiny pods, take a dry brush and gently scrape out whatever is lodged into the rim of the metal surface.

This goes without saying, but I am mentioning it just in case — DO NOT ever immerse them in water! It’s an electric device after all, so any liquid will mess with its wiring.

ALWAYS unplug your earphones and do not clean them while in use! I know it’s pretty obvious…but hey! I don’t want any fingers pointing my way in case you decide to do otherwise.
