Because many times you learn about men and women who have done exceptional work in their respective fields. Similarly, as a way to honour an American Geologist and oceanographic cartographer, Marie Tharp, Google dedicated an engaging audio-visual doodle to her. Let us get to know more about the exceptional woman that Marie Tharp was.
Who Was Marie Tharp
Marie Tharp was born and raised in Michigan and was the only child of her parents. Her father was a soil surveyor in USA’s Agricultural Department, whereas her mother was a teacher. Initially, Marie Tharp was interested in pursuing a career in teaching, and in 1943, she completed a bachelor’s degree in English and Music from Ohio University. Since she had a class on geology during her bachelor’s, Marie was later granted admission to Ann Arbor’s petroleum geology program at the University of Michigan, and then she earned herself a Master’s degree in it. Marie Tharp died on August 23, 2006.
Career As A Geologist
Marie Tharp, started her career as a junior geologist in an oil company, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. For around four years she worked in this company, and then she went ahead to work for the American Museum Of Natural History. She later became the first woman to have ever worked with Lamont Geological Observatory. Creating the first scientific map of the Atlantic Ocean floor is considered Marie Tharp’s greatest contribution to the world of oceanography.
