Meet Gauri Sawant, The Transgender Activist Who Sushmita Sen Will Portray In The Upcoming Web Series, ‘Taali’
Movies based on somebody’s life are often made in the Indian film industry. However, it is quite difficult to weave the movie in a way that keeps the audience glued to the screens. So, there I have my apprehensions when it comes to biopics but I am intrigued by them too. Talking about which, Sushmita Sen’s first look at the web series Taali was released on October 6, Thursday. Sushmita Sen will be playing the role of Shree Gauri Sawant, the transgender activist who has long fought for the community’s rights.

Gauri Sawant’s Early Life
Gauri Sawant was born and brought up in Pune, Maharashtra. She was naturally born as a boy named, Ganesh, so it took some time for her to entirely accept herself. Gauri’s father was a police officer, and her mother’s name was Gayatri. She lost her mother to AIDS and that was the time when she took the name from her mother.

Her Works
Gauri Sawant has worked selflessly for the Transgender community and well her hard work has paid off. She was the first transgender activist to be appointed as one of the 12 members’ ambassadors from Maharashtra by the Election Commission Of India, in 2019. Gauri Sawant also runs a Non-Governmental Organisation, Sakhi Char Chowghi Trust, that was started in 2000. Her NGO basically works towards promoting awareness of safe sex, and also gives counselling sessions to people of the transgender community. Gauri Sawant was also the petitioner in the case after which the Supreme Court of India recongnised the transgender community as the third gender. She was also the first transgender activist to seek the adoption of transgender people in 2014.
