While We Await Justice For Nirbhaya, There Has Been A Small Victory In The Unnao Case. Kuldeep Sengar Has Been Charged For The Victim’s Father’s Death

It is women empowerment month but no matter how much we talk about empowerment; it means nothing if we can’t curb these horrific rape cases that are happening. True empowerment will only come after all the women of our country are safe from lecherous monsters who think raping a woman is a way for them to prove their “manliness”. But that is a very far-fetched solution until then let’s talk about the rape cases that have left us absolutely speechless.

Nirbhaya (hands down scariest of them all), Kathua, Priyanka Reddy, the case of the girl who got raped twice in one night on different occasions and every other case that has seen the light of day. Look at this list and think about all the women who have survived and succumbed to sexual assault. Don’t you think this is an epidemic level issue?

Joining this list is the infamous Unnao case (we have infamous rape cases, it is so sad). You remember the horrific case, don’t you? The one where a 17-year-old girl was raped by several men in the house of expelled BJP politician Kuldeep Singh Sengar. Unlike a lot of rape survivors, this minor girl decided to fight her rapists and bring them to justice. As brave as this move is, it began a series of unfortunate events for her and her family which eventually led to her being abducted, beaten and burnt alive in December 2019.

Amongst all the chaos, in 2018 the victim’s father was arrested in an illegal arms case which was thrown out later because they proved he was framed. He died in judicial custody in Unnao on 9 April 2018 after being brutally beaten up. Her father’s postmortem report showed multiple abrasions near his abdomen, thighs, buttock, knees, and arms. This happened only a day after his daughter (the victim) tried to commit suicide outside UP CM Yogi Adityanath’s house and a few days later Sengar and nine others were charged with murder.

The reason I am highlighting this particular incident is that today is a win for the late victim. Finally, a district judge has found Sengar guilty of murdering her father. The judge said that Sengar had no intention of killing her father, but it was the brutal beating that led to his death. Hence, Sengar has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Apart from this conviction, the court had already charged Sengar to jail for the “remainder for his biological life” for the rape of the minor girl.

This feels like justice has been served.
