Vidya Balan Has A Strict No Retouch Rule, Says Dabboo Ratnani

When Selena Gomez put out her unedited and not photoshop-fixed pictures on Instagram, I was honestly so happy. I mean finally, there were celebrities trying to break the unreachable beauty standards set by society and the film and music industries. And I always wondered when our Bollywood actors and actresses take a stand against these unrealistic beauty standards. Guess I didn’t have to wait too long. The groundbreaking Bollywood actress Vidya Balan is all set to break stereotypes all over again. And this time she is breaking the beauty standard stereotypes that exist in our society.

Recently, in an interview, the famous photographer Daboo Ratnani revealed that the Bollywood actress, Vidya Balan, is quite comfortable in her own skin and doesn’t want her pictures to be edited. He revealed that Vidya Balan has made a few rules on how her pictures should be used.

According to Daboo Ratnani, the veteran Bollywood actress Vidya Balan has asked photographers and magazines to not re-touch her pictures. And that is because she doesn’t want to look slimmer than she actually is. Daboo Ratnani said, “I try to achieve the best lighting on the set itself, thus relying as little as possible on the post-treatment of pictures. [Doing so is] all the more important with Vidya because she doesn’t like her images to be re-touched. She is comfortable in her own skin and doesn’t want to be made slimmer for pictures. During magazine shoots, she tells the editorial team that the photos should only be color-corrected and shared, without any re-touching… Say, if the flooring or the leaves in the background need color correction, we do that. We don’t re-touch her image.”

The Bollywood actress Vidya Balan has been in the film industry for quite a while and her journey has not been easy. She has many times come out in the open and spoken about how she has been body shamed. In fact, during the promotions of her new movie Sherni, Vidya Balan revealed that there was a time when her body weight had become a ‘national issue.’

But that hasn’t (and I’m pretty sure will not) stop Vidya Balan from taking over Bollywood. In an interview with a leading daily, Vidya Balan said, “I have had hormonal issues all my life. For the longest time, I hated my body. I thought it had betrayed me. On the days I was under the pressure of looking my best, I would bloat up and I would be so angry and frustrated… I began to love and accept myself a little more each day and therefore, I became more acceptable to people. They began to shower me with love and accolades and appreciation and all of that.”

And I for one, know that the journey towards self-acceptance is not an easy one. It is very difficult to love oneself when you’re criticized and constantly shamed for your body. But the Bollywood actress, Vidya Balan, has clearly come a long way in her journey. And I wish that all those battling with their insecurities learn to accept themselves for who they are. Loving yourself regardless of your imperfections is the purest form of self-love. And we all deserve that pure love from ourselves.
