Uttarakhand To Launch A New Programme Where Houses Will Now Be Named After The Women In The Family.

There was a time, and in most places of our country there still is, where women are treated no more than a burden that families marry off as soon as they come of age. Ripping girls off of every basic right that is otherwise extended to men, the society has always been unfair to the females of our country. Whether it is about depriving them of a chance to get educated or the right to have an equal share in their parents’ inheritance, women have had it worse. The brunt of societal bias and patriarchy has always been carried by the women. But seems like, not anymore. Because in a bid to change this narrative, is the district administration of Garhwal region in Uttarakhand with their newest initiative called, “Ghaur ki Pachyan, Nauni Ku Nau“.

Translating into ‘Identity of the house, in the name of the daughter’, this programme initiated by the administration of Uttarakhand aims at naming family households in the name of the women of the family, who up until now have only been neglected and kept on the back burner while catering to men.

The programme runs with the main aim of educating people and creating awareness about gender rights and property ownership among women and their families.

Under this programme, the house’s door would now proudly display the name of the daughter of the house. At the moment, the Uttarakhand region holds a healthy sex ratio of 1,103 women to every 1,000 men. However, the child sex ratio (0-6 years) in the region indicates the gender discrimination which is still prevalent in the state. And perhaps to take corrective measures for the same, they’ve come up with this idea to empower women and their marginalized status in the society.

To ensure that the programme runs seamlessly, they have distributed nameplates to over 150 houses in three villages in Khirsu, Pauri and Yamkeshwar blocks kickstarting the programme with a certain enthusiasm. According to the District Chief Development Officer (CDO) Ashish Bhatgain, this “Ghaur ki Pachyan, Nauni Ku Nau” initiative falls broadly under the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign.

The chairperson of Uttarakhand State Commission for Women, Vijaya Barthwal also spoke on the matter and shared how women till now wouldn’t be able to, or either let to claim their ancestral property leaving it to their male siblings. But with this in place, there is hope that a woman’s status and claim in the society shall improve. Or so we hope!
