UK Prime Minister Liz Truss’ Cabinet Is First To Have No White Men Holding Any Top 4 Senior Posts

Mary Elizabeth Truss has been elected as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. She assumed the title on September 6, 2022, after Boris Johnson’s resignation from the post. Liz Truss, a Leader of the Conservatives, was appointed as the PM by Queen Elizabeth II. Truss went on to defeat Rishi Sunak by 20927 votes, with her total vote count being 81,326.

Liz Truss’ appointment as the Prime Minister has been quite the talked-about event globally. But her cabinet and the ministers who are a part of it have recently hit headlines as well. What is so special about PM Liz Truss’ cabinet is that, for the first time in the history of Britain’s politics, no white man has assumed the top posts. The cabinet of ministers is touted as the most diverse one so far women assuming the PM and deputy PM’s posts, while Black and South Asian ministers assume other important titles.

Indian-origin Suella Braverman, who was the candidate chosen to succeed Boris Johnson but she eliminated in the second round of voting, has been chosen to be the new UK Home Secretary. She is of Indian origin as her mother is Tamilian and her father is a Goan.

James Cleverly has scripted history as he is UK’s first Black foreign minister. His official post is that of Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs. James Clearly hails from the West African country, Sierra Leone.

Kwasi Kwarteng has also scripted history by becoming the first Black finance minister of the UK. His official post is called Chancellor of the Exchequer and Second Lord of the Treasury. Kwasi Kwarteng hails from Ghana.

Therese Coffey has assumed the post of health secretary and deputy prime minister as well. She is also the first woman ever to hold this post in UK’s cabinet.
