Trolls Morphed Twinkle Khanna’s Pictures On Laxmii Poster And Called It “Twinkle Bomb”. So We’re Trolling Women For Men’s Actions, Again?

I can’t remember the last time a celebrity did something out of the ordinary and didn’t get brutally trolled for it. What started as fun and games has now turned into something exceedingly toxic. Celebrities have gotten trolled for their Instagram captions, their airport looks, movies that they play a role in and, hell, a lot of them have even gotten trolled for reading. It’s unnecessary and not funny anymore. Although, if there is one celebrity who knows how to handle trolls, it’s Mrs Funny Bones, Twinkle Khanna. So when social media cracked down on her because of Akshay Kumar’s latest movie, Laxmii, she played along and shut them up pretty good. Other celebrities should take notes from her, they will need it.

Akshay Kumar’s latest movie Laxmii, originally Laxmii Bomb, has been on the receiving end of some brutal trolling. There have been calls to boycott the movie and social media is outraged. And while that is not uncommon or something that surprises us, this time those trolls crossed the line, or should I say bridge (get it?).

The reason why the movie Laxmii is getting so much flak is that a lot of religious groups are upset that goddess Laxmi’s name was attached to the word “bomb”. Out all the thousands of problems we have, social media chooses to act on that one. Just awesome. And while Akshay has maintained a stoic silence about this entire thing, his outspoken wife just couldn’t. You see, trolls took Twinkle’s pictures and morphed them to look the way Akshay looked on the posters for Laxmii. And it was not done in a tasteful or funny way.

In the picture of Twinkle floating around on social media, netizens turned her skin blue and put a large red bindi on her forehead. They called this meme “Twinkle Bomb”. Original, isn’t it? I am not sure what they thought this was going to solve but here we are talking about yet another wife being blamed for something her husband was a part of. Was the entire thing with Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli not enough?

Twinkle took to her weekly column in TOI to talk about the troll and how she reacted to them. In the column, she said it was more “flattering” than anything else to be called a bomb in her middle-ages. She wrote, “The trolls have been after the man of the house’s Laxmmi Bomb and for some odd reason, they have taken pictures of me, turned my skin the same peacock shade as Lord Krishna, added a red bindi and are sharing posters called Twinkle Bomb. Honestly, I am rather flattered because this moniker has come along at the right time for, as a middle-aged woman, I was beginning to think that my bombshell days were far behind me.”

Further, she talked about troll-psychology and the comments people dropped on the memes and posts. She said, “I look at another meme I am tagged in. This one comes with a comment, ‘Third-class person. You make a joke about God.’ I am almost tempted to reply, ‘God clearly likes a good joke, otherwise, she would not have made you’.”

I am glad that Twinkle can laugh about this and that “Twinkle Bomb” is making her feel flattered but that doesn’t make it alright. In fact, it’s extremely messed up that trolls are going after her just because her husband is in a movie whose name they don’t like. Doesn’t that sound utterly ridiculous to you? This whole practice of attacking the woman when her husband or boyfriend does something that doesn’t sit well with the public is getting extremely infuriating. And I am not even going start on how messed up the reasons behind this whole thing are. How did changing the name of a movie benefit anyone? I mean what’s in a name, right?

You’ll want to hear something ironic though? These trolls are all going on about how the name of the movie is disrespectful to the deity Laxmi. But then here they are, mocking a woman and morphing her pictures. So, remind me again, what’s the point of all this?

Having said that, you have to love Twinkle’s attitude towards the whole thing. Once again her wittiness and her “funny bone” made an incredibly uncomfortable situation, well, funny. But as I said earlier, that doesn’t make what happened here okay.
