This Woman’s Maternity Photoshoot Involving Live Bees On Her Belly Went Viral And It’s Making Everyone Uncomfortable

The internet is a place where you can stumble upon the weirdest things and social media is just a small part of it. On average, millennials spend around three hours a day on social media mindlessly scrolling through (huh, that’s it? It sure feels like 10) random pictures and videos. Which means that by now, we should be totally immune to the occasional icky and creepy images that pop up and achieve virality. I mean, let’s face it, netizens love themselves some crazy stuff. From people icing their vaginas to someone mixing sperm in a smoothie (*gag reflex*), it feels like we have seen it all. I mean, it’s not like there aren’t enough bizarre things in the world already. But every day we find, that we despite us thinking otherwise, we have not really seen it all.

The reason I am talking about icky images and videos floating around social media is because the pictures from this Texas woman’s maternity photoshoot involving a swarm of bees has gone viral. Not that we can be surprised, bees don’t exactly scream maternal love. Now I know maternity photo shoots are supposed to all pretty and dainty looking, but this one has left us feeling unbelievably uncomfortable and with a huge mental scar.

You see, Bethany Karulak-Baker is a beekeeper from Boerne, Texas. In the outdoor photoshoot, you can see her standing next to a buzzing beehive with her belly practically covered in bees. A pregnant belly with a layer of bees on it is not something we are accustomed to seeing every day. I can’t even think about it without shuddering involuntarily.

While posting the pictures on Facebook, Bethany wrote, “Here are my maternity photos I promised to share. I wasn’t stung once. The queen is tethered to my belly inside of a cage. We just dumped the bees on me and they naturally began to beard. Don’t worry, this was approved by my doc. This is roughly 10k bees. Cheers, everyone!”

If I have one ant on me, I hop around like an imbecile to get it off. This woman had 10,000 bees on her and she looks calmer than most people in a meditation class. If she ever joins a show like Fear Factor or Khatron Ke Khiladi, I am willing to bet all my money her.

In another post, Bethany revealed why chose bees as a theme for her photoshoot. She started out by saying, “This isn’t just a photo of a woman with honeybees on her belly” and then went on to share her tragic story. She said she suffered a miscarriage just last year that caused her to fall in a deep depression and she struggled with her mental health for a long time. Then when she got pregnant again, she decided it was better not to tell anyone since she was afraid of a miscarriage again. She closes her post saying, “So, you see, this isn’t just a photo of a woman with honeybees on her belly. This photo represents much, much more. My only hope is that one day my children will look at this photo and see the warrior inside of me.”

Don’t get me wrong but I just can’t understand the metaphor. How is putting 10,000 live bees on your pregnant belly supposed to link to being a warrior? If anything, it’s extremely dangerous for an unborn baby. Maybe I am extremely biased against the bees, but, honey (lovely pun) was this necessary?

You can see why these images have gone viral and of course, netizens weren’t too happy about this photoshoot. Check out their reactions:

Well, now I think I really have seen it all.
