This Woman Was Gang Raped On A Moving Bus In UP. This Is The Third Such Incident In The State In This Month

On 16th December 2012, 23-year-old Jyoti Singh was gang raped  on a moving bus by six men. This brutal and monstrous incident better known as the Nirbhaya case started a new chapter in the history of sexual assaults in India. The convicts were hanged to death early this year but even then, everything about the Nirbhaya gangrape gives us goosebumps. Now, the reason I am trudging this horrid memory back is that there was another very similar case in UP. A woman was gang raped on a moving bus that was headed toward Delhi. Just when we think rapes and sexual assaults in India can’t get any worse, they do.

The Nirbhaya case forced people to pay attention to rapes and sexual assaults. Now, it has become an epidemic. One that we have no vaccine for. At the time, there were candle marches, protests and a lot of conversation about women’s safety. But here we are, nearly 8 years later discussing yet another woman who was gang-raped on a moving bus. It seems like we are standing perfectly still in the same place as we were when this happened with Jyoti Singh.

On Saturday, a woman was found lying unconscious on Delhi Road in Meerut. She was subject to gang rape all night on a moving bus by the driver and the conductor. In her statement, the victim said that she had boarded a bus Bhaisali bus stand on Friday night. On the bus, she was given a soft drink which was spiked. After she lost consciousness, the driver and conductor of the bus brutally raped her all night and then threw her off. Isn’t this incident eerily similar to Nirbhaya?

This incident just brings back so many fears. What is the solution? How do we put a stop to this kind of animalistic and vile behaviour? Should we implement chemical castration of rapists as a punishment like the PM of Pakistan had suggested? I am certainly thinking of it right now.

Oh, but I haven’t even told you the absolute worst part yet. Yes, I am the bearer of horrible news today. This incident is the third of its kind in Uttar Pradesh in the last month. The rate of gang-rapes in our country is increasing at an alarming rate. We really haven’t learned anything from Nirbhaya’s case, have we?

This is extremely worrisome.
