This Woman Doing The ‘Shuffle’ A Style Of Dancing, In A Saree And Sneakers Is So Cool

I was in 10th standard when I wore my first saree. I remember it was for celebrating Teacher’s day at school, and as I went up on the stage to give a dance performance, my teachers rather than being thrilled to see students put up a show, were seen frowning for women must be ladylike in a saree and dancing, was simply not the way to go. Of course, at the time it didn’t bother me much, but as years went by, society tried to box me in many other ways laying down for us the guidelines to how we must live life, dress up, when should we get married and even how we must behave. But in my experience, there is no right or wrong way to do anything, there is just one way and that is yours.

If tomorrow you, as a woman, want to dress up as a boy and do salsa, you go for it. Similarly, if you want to drape yourself in a beautiful saree, play a Bollywood song and shuffle to it, then so be it! Because that is exactly what this Instagrammer is doing. Putting up her videos on her handle @shufflewithakanksha, Akanksha became the first woman ever to be seen shuffling and how in a saree and doing it in style.

Here we are, struggling to even walk straight, trying not to trip on the ends of out saree and there is this beautifully talented mother of two, Akanksha who has shown us how it is done. Swerving to the song “Girls like to swing” from the movie Dil Dhadakne Do, her video is creating waves on the internet.

Giving you the “World’s 1st Saree Shuffle” on the occasion of “Karwa Chauth”!!! ?? Shuffling wrapped in 6 yards of this chiffon elegance was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done (without putting a single hole in it?)? Note: Please head over to my YouTube to watch the longer clip of this video? My channel is “Shuffle With Akanksha”. Please subscribe to it and I’ll be posting more videos and tutorials slowly ??? Karwa Chauth is an Indian festival when the married women, especially in Northern India, fast from sunrise to moonrise for the safety and longevity of their husbands? My 2 cents on this; shouldn’t it be like a reciprocated thing? ???? I watched 5 YouTube tutorials to tie this saree in a dhoti style ?? The number of times my feet got stuck in this saree during this shuffle is the exact reason why no one shuffles in sarees ?? The struggle is real? We women have had a lot of dreams and aspirations as little girls, we go through a lot of transitions, we make truce with our lives as our destiny…. Let us be free, let us breathe, let us live our dreams! Please don’t prototype and objectify us? Her caption was fitting, she wrote, “Giving you the “World’s 1st Saree Shuffle” on the occasion of “Karwa Chauth”!!! Shuffling wrapped in 6 yards of this chiffon elegance was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done (without putting a single hole in it)”

Her caption continues to talk about the tradition of Karvachauth where she gives her two cents about how it should have both men and women keep the fast. She then talks about her performance in a beautifully draped saree and how the video that we were watching might look flawless but actually took her quite a lot of tries to get right. She wrote, “I watched 5 YouTube tutorials to tie this saree in a dhoti style. The number of times my feet got stuck in this saree during this shuffle is the exact reason why no one shuffles in sarees. The struggle is real.”

“We women have had a lot of dreams and aspirations as little girls, we go through a lot of transitions, we make truce with our lives as our destiny…. Let us be free, let us breathe, let us live our dreams! Please don’t prototype and objectify us, ” writes Akanksha. It is time women break free from the pigeon holes we have been shoved into, and do what we think is right. Be it hula hooping in a saree, or shuffling or even break dancing, as long as it makes us happy, we don’t need anyone’s validation.
