This Woman Didn’t Know She Was Pregnant. Thought She Was Passing A Kidney Stone, Delivered A Baby Instead

Most people aren’t aware of it, but there is a concept called cryptic pregnancy. It’s when a woman doesn’t know or realise she is pregnant until the very last few weeks of the pregnancy or in some extreme cases until she gives birth. Even though it’s rare, cryptic pregnancies happen more often than you know. It’s scary to have a baby the usual way, this is a hundred times scarier. Merely a few months ago a woman from Indonesia claimed she got pregnant by a gush of wind and went into labour within 15 minutes. Not making this up. It was a classic case of cryptic pregnancy mixed with well, blind faith. A rather dangerous recipe. And recently, a woman in the US went through a similar ordeal. No there wasn’t a gust of wind involved but there was a toilet. I can’t decide I should laugh at this or be scared.

On 8 March, Melissa Surgecoff hailing from Massachusetts, USA was going about her day as usual. Suddenly she started experiencing intense cramps and abdominal pain. Her partner, Donnie Campbell thought she had kidney stones and called emergency services for medical assistance. However, that’s when everything went awry.

Melissa sat on the toilet seat which gave her a little relief. After a while though, the immense pain was back with a vengeance and she started screaming. That’s when she felt something “rushed out” of her. Melissa said, “I look in the toilet and I still didn’t know what it was. And I thought I basically lost an organ because I didn’t know.” But in reality, she had just given birth to her baby on the toilet. She was pregnant but didn’t even know it.

In an interview, her partner, Donnie Campbell said, “We were just kind of in shock and not expecting it, and all the sudden there’s a baby in the toilet.”

Okay, you have to admit it’s kind of hilarious. But at the same time, it’s terrifying. Being unprepared and not ready to be parents is one thing, this is a whole other level. Now, I am sure most of you are wondering exactly how Melissa didn’t notice any symptoms of pregnancy. The baby bump is kind of hard to miss. In this case though, Melissa barely had a visible bump. She said, “We thought it was medication because I had just changed to a new multiple sclerosis medication and that was one of the symptoms, gaining weight.”

Both, Melissa and her baby are happy and healthy. That’s all that really matters. You can’t deny though, this is very, very bizarre. But hey, at least the baby has an amazing birth story!
