This Serena Williams’ Nike Ad Is Everything We Want

We’ve all seen Women’s Day videos and some would argue that we’ve perhaps seen to many of them. So, yes, that little, itsy bitsy boredom has kicked in. But then we saw this one, and we are feeling pumped and excited. And honestly, more than just a little inspired. 

This Nike ad featuring Serena Williams has her talking about all the things that don’t make her the right kind of woman –  she’s oversized, overconfident, she’s black, and even that that she’s probably not suited for motherhood – things that would affect anybody’s confidence. Pretty standard, you think. Till now. The ad then changes to a message that’s inclusive, inspiring and starts this week on a fabulous note.

This works on many levels. We are talking about one of the greatest tennis players the world has ever seen. For the uninitiated, Serena holds the most Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles combined amongst active players. Phew! Let that sink in. Here’s another tidbit. In April 2017, she played some sensational games on the court before announcing that she was 20 weeks pregnant, and would have to miss the rest of the season. We can literally think of no one else who could have done this ad as much justice as Serena.
