This Man Thinks His Daughter-In-Law Is Possessed And Has Stopped His Son From Consummating Their Marriage. WTF Even?

This Man Thinks His Daughter-In-Law Is Possessed And Has Stopped His Son From Consummating Their Marriage. WTF Even?

Ever since the lockdown started, the UN, the NCW and every organization that works towards the empowerment of women have been talking about the major hike in the cases of violence against women. The number of rapes, dowry deaths even child marriage is on the rise. But what came as the biggest shocker was the surge in domestic violence cases. The domestic violence cases that have been reported have increased three-fold.

We have heard of the most brutal domestic violence cases coming to light in the last five months. I mean, do you remember the case where a man from Gujurat thrashed his wife because she beat him in a game of Ludo? Or the case where a man beat his wife up for putting less sugar in his chai? Or the case where a child witnessed his father beating his mother to death? My faith in humanity is shaken and these cases don’t even scratch the surface. 2020 has seen not one but two pandemics. One is obviously the coronavirus and other, better-concealed one, is what is now being called a shadow pandemic of domestic violence.

The reason I am reminding you’ll of all the heinous cases we have seen so far is because there is a new one that is baffling us right now. You see, recently word has popped up about a case where a man from Gujarat stopped his son and daughter-in-law from consummating their marriage on the pretext that the woman is “possessed by a spirit”.

The man hailing from Sector 22 of Gandhinagar claims that the spirit would enter his son’s body if he had sex with the possessed woman. Baffling, right?

It just gets worse from here. When the 43-year-old woman tried to protest these absurd beliefs of her in-laws, she was beaten up and kept in the house by them and her husband. She finally decided to seek help and has filed an FIR against them under the Domestic Violence Act on Sunday.

According to the FIR, the couple had gotten married in February 2020. They had a court marriage after which the woman moved from Vadodara to Gandhinagar.

She said, “My father-in-law believes I am possessed by some spirit and if I have sex with my husband the spirit will enter his body.” She further added in her FIR, “As I protested against this behaviour, I was mentally harassed and assaulted by my in-laws and husband.”

First of all, how do they know she is possessed? Secondly, I didn’t know ghosts are contagious. I think the woman’s in-laws and husband have gotten “spirit” confused with the coronavirus.

In the FIR, she has also alleged that her mother-in-law would instigate her father-in-law to sexually molest her. Seriously, what is happening to the world?

She said in her FIR, “Whenever my mother-in-law found me alone, she would tell my father-in-law to go and sexually harass me.”

A woman instigating a man to molest another woman. Congratulations, we have hit the bottom of the pit.

The woman claimed that the in-laws and her husband forced her to leave the house on March 10 and then refused to take her back. They also threatened her with dire consequences with she filed a complaint with the police. But she did file a complaint against them for domestic violence, criminal intimidation and abatement.

You know, if you remove the domestic violence and sexual harassment angle of this case, all the ghost stuff is pretty funny. I don’t know what gave them the idea or why they didn’t want the woman sleeping with her husband but I do know that them not taking her back is probably the best thing that has happened in this entire incident.

Our society is plagued with a lot of social problems. Two of the biggest ones being domestic violence and blind superstitions. However, when you combine the two, it spells one of the biggest recipes for disaster. I just understand why “live and let live” is such a difficult concept for people to understand.
