This Man Decided To Marry Himself After His Fiancé Broke Up With Him A Few Months Before Their Wedding. Oh Well

Weddings, I have noticed, more often than not are remembered for their beautiful ceremony and the joyous occasion of two people in love tying the knot but for the things that went wrong. Be it the chicken tikka that felt a little under cooked, the decorations that were too over the top, the relative who couldn’t handle his drink, or in a few cases where either the bride or groom don’t show up, weddings are usually remember when things are unusual and funny. And while there is hardly anything people can do about these things, this man turned the most bleak odds in his favour when he decided to marry himself after he broke up with his fiancé.

No, I am not making this up. A man decided to marry himself after his fiancé left him. Engaged to Vitor Bueno last year in November, Diogo Rabelo  was going to be a happy man for he thought he was going to marry the love of his life. However, after a series of unforeseeable yet irreconcilable differences and arguments, the couple decided to part ways and Vitor left Diogo in July.

One would assume at this point, the story would end with a refund on the venue, decor and catering following by a sad interaction with all the guests as you call them to inform that the wedding is off.  Except, that is not what happened with Diogo at all, for he decided to make the most of even this lemon that life threw his way.And he decided to marry himself.

Taking this moment in his life to embrace himself and dive straight into some self-love, Diogo decided to keep the wedding on, with one slight alteration – there was not going to be a bride anymore, just the groom who was going to marry himself. Tying the knot with himself on October 16, Diogo celebrated the day that was earlier reserved for a wedding at a resort in Itacare, Bahia.

Almost 40 guests attended this one of a kind wedding, where Diogo was even seen saying ‘I do’ to himself looking in a mirror. A video that is now going viral on the internet. He further spoke on the matter and said. “Today is one of the happiest days of my life, as I’m with the people I love the most in this life, celebrating what could be a tragedy, but I made it a comedy. I analysed the situation for a month and decided that I had to appreciate and love myself. I kept the ceremony and 40 of my 50 guests came.” Of course that didn’t include Vitor’s family or friends.

Diogo went on to say, “The message I wanted to send to people with this marriage of mine is not that of a victim, I do not depend on a marriage to be happy. I do want to marry someone else, and I want to have children, but my happiness cannot depend on that.” And as eccentric as it may sound, his view on life and marriage (or lack there of) made perfect sense. We don’t have to  depend on one person giving us or taking away the world from us. If it’s meant to be, it is meant to be. And if it’s not, you always have yourself (to marry) and most times,  that is more than enough to keep you going.
