Taapsee Pannu Signed On To Play The Titular Role In Mithali Raj’s Biopic ‘Shabaash Mithu’. We Can’t Wait For It.
Finally redeeming itself after years and years of minting out cinema that did the women in this country, celebrated or otherwise, no real good, Bollywood seems to be moving in the right direction. It is finally stepping up its content game with movies that are socially relevant and empowering women. With several women-centric projects now hitting the table and even the screens, we have another exciting movie lined up for us and that is the Women Indian Cricket Team’s championed captain, Mithali Raj’s biopic – Shabaash Mithu.
The cricket prodigy who made women and the entire country proud on numerous occasions will finally get a biopic that she so deserves! And her character will be essayed by none other than one of the most fearless actresses on the block, that is, the Badla actress – Taapsee Pannu. She took to Instagram to confirm that she will be playing the iconic role of Mithali Raj on the occasion of the cricket captain’s birthday. We for one can’t wait to see these two star-powers unite!

Taapsee Pannu shared a heartening post on her Insta account as she wrote, “On this Birthday of yours I don’t know what gift I can give you but this promise that I shall give it all I have to make sure you will be proud of what you see of yourself on screen with #ShabaashMithu.” And call it an intuition or a fact but Taapsee is known to take on such challenging roles and meaty roles and do them full justice. So we have quite the hopes from this one.

She then continued to write, “Happy Happy Birthday Captain @mithaliraj ! You have made all of us proud in more than many ways and it’s truly an honour to be chosen to showcase your journey on screen.” And honestly, with movies about sportsmen dropping every now and then, it only made sense to accredit what the women have been doing the field, and how.
With numerous achievements tied to her name and having been the only women’s cricket team captain to take our country to the World Cup finals in the years 2005 and 2017, Mithali Raj has not just proved her mettle as a woman in this country but also as a brilliant sportswoman. She has always taken any challenge head on and changed our nation’s perception about cricket not being a woman’s game. Which is particularly why, we feel so happy about not just Mithali Raj’s biopic but also Taapsee Pannu playing her role. It’s just the best and most befitting combo we could ask for.

Taapsee even made a statement about how this role would challenge her in terms of the pressure that comes along with playing such a celebrated sportsperson, one that serves as an ideal to millions. She said, “Though I have already started feeling the pressure of stepping into her shoes, I don’t want to trade this place with anyone else. Mithali has always been brave and strong to back the truth, and that is why I connect with her. She has changed the way women’s cricket is perceived in India and her story is truly worth telling.” The movie will be directed by Rahul Dholakia and is slated to hit the screens next year.
