Taapsee Pannu Is All About Talking About Periods And We Support Her Wholeheartedly!

It doesn’t matter how old we are and how many years ago we started chumming, I think we can all admit we hate it. The period cramps, PMS and walking around wet in various crevices is no fun. Plus, getting out of bed seems like such an effort, we don’t want to. The thing with periods is, it never gets better. Yes, you might cramp more once and have back aches later but it never really becomes less worse. But when I look back at the time when I started period-ing (this needs to be a word), I do wish I was more equipped to handle it. The day I got my period for the first time, I was petrified. I had no clue what menstruation is and I freaked out because why the f**k am I bleeding from down there? My mom told me to miss school that day, and then explained the whole thing, after I was done freaking out. Of course, the first few cycles, I used to end up staining my dress. used to cry and then and I was just all over the place. A lot of us have had similar first-period experience – why weren’t we made aware of things beforehand? Thankfully, Taapsee Pannu has joined hands with an NGO, which works to give menstrual education to women. This is the same NGO that also has the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle working for their cause.

In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, Taapsee expressed, “Having periods is common to Meghan Markle, me and every other woman in the world. With great power comes great responsibility, and if people like her contribute and support this kind of initiative, it widens its reach, as she is in a power position.”

In fact, she spoke about how children should be educated about menstruation not after they the adolescent phase, but before. “There’s a chapter about menstruation in biology, but by the time you deal with it, you have already heard about it from sources in a weird way, and you’re hushing the topic and getting awkward in the class. The first step should be to talk about it, as regular period determines the health of a female. It is because we don’t talk about it, a lot of health hazards are not addressed.” Now that’s a great start! A lot of young girls go through a lot of embarrassment and shame around menstruation. Even parents tend to sush us up!

When you go to a chemist to buy pads, why does he give it to you wrapped in a piece of paper? What is so embarrassing about it? Taapsee revealed, “For the longest time, I made my mother buy me sanitary pads because growing up even I thought it was not normal to carry it around openly and it had to be smuggled home. Today, I have the courage to tell the chemist not to wrap it up. The change will come when everyone starts doing this.”

How many of us are guilty of this? There was a time when I too used to take a pad to the washroom hiding it in my pocket. But as I grew up (or so I believe) I realised there’s literally no need to create so much hype around menstruation. Why shouldn’t we carry a pad openly? If men around you get uncomfy or the women start gossiping, f**k them. You do you.
