Sushmita Sen Said Becoming A Mother Was The Wisest Decision She Made At 24. We Can’t Even Decide On Our Clothes!

Most of us, when we’re 24 years old, are just a bunch of nerves. People that age, are working their ass off during the weekdays, are drunk most weekends, and poor all year long. We have no track of our finances, in fact, we don’t even know what that word even means. We get paid in peanuts, and live hand-to-mouth, in the quite literal sense, because we are burning most of our money in food and alcohol. On the other hand, Sushmita Sen was actually adulting in her early 20s and we respect her for that.

She was crowned Miss Universe at the age of 18, and became the first Indian to win that title. Two years later, at the age of 20, she made her Bollywood debut in Dastak. At 23, she bagged a role in David Dhawan’s Biwi no 1, alongside Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and Tabu – actors who were long established in the industry. However, if you ask her what she is the most proud of, she will tell you that it is becoming a mother at the age of 24.

Sushmita had won a Filmfare award for her performance in Biwi no 1 and was on top of her game. So what prompted her to adopt a child at that point in life? She opened up about motherhood and that she has no qualms whatsoever about her decision. “In the natural birth, the mother and the child connect through the umbilical cord but in adoption, the mother and the child are connected by this higher power, a connection that you cannot cut off. I have had the privilege of experiencing it twice. To become a mother who has given birth from the heart. I have not missed a day of feeling the joy of motherhood,” the 43-year-old actress said.

In fact, she believes that this decision wasn’t an act of charity but that of self-preservation. She said, “The wisest decision I made at the age of 24 was to become a mother. It stabilised my life. People think it was a great act of charity and wonderful action but it was self-preservation. It was me protecting myself.” She further added, “Doing something that encompasses your heart, your calling always makes sure that you stay true to your DNA and who you are. Yes, the tough part was to do that at the age of 24-year-old when I was at the top of my game in my career. Being an actress is a challenging job. It is a very self-centered job. You have to be all about yourself. Your vanity has to be at its highest for you to be successful. But I am proud of the 24-year-old because I could have delayed the process, ignore the calling but I didn’t do that,” Sen added.

This woman never ceases to amaze us. She is strong, smart, full of compassion and beautiful in and out. Sushmita Sen revealed that she feels thankful that her daughters are reciprocating her love. “The rest of it I give credit to my children because the truth is I chose them, they didn’t choose me. They didn’t have a say in it. Now, when my Renee is almost 20 and Alisah is 10, I get a feeling that they are choosing me back, which is a great feeling,” the actor said.
