Sure Gully Boy Was Decent But 13 Awards? Alia Bhatt Even Won Best Actress! A Rather Lacklustre Awards Season, We Think.

When Gully Boy was sent as India’s official entry to the 92nd Oscars, I was really unimpressed. When that film released, there was already so much hype around it and I too was dragged into the bandwagon by my friend. I remember leaving the theatre not wanting to watch it again. For me it was just that, a one-time-watch kinda film. It didn’t entertain me and I found Safeena (Alia Bhatt) a milder version of Murad’s (Ranveer Singh) abusive dad. This movie, built on exchange of musical insults and dreams that came true, was decent. But I was not intrigued and neither was I awestruck by it. But that’s just me and most of us at Hauterfly, I figured, after we had a discussion on it today morning.

While I understand some and maybe a lot of people liked it, I definitely don’t think it was worthy of the Filmfare awards it won this year. Ranveer Singh won the Best Actor Award for Gully Boy. His performance was good and but he did have a tough competition. The other nominees included Akshay Kumar for Kesari, Ayushmann Khurrana for Bala, Vicky Kaushal for Uri, Shahid Kapoor for Kabir Singh and Hrithik Roshan for Super 30. But they didn’t even nominate Ayushmann for Article 15 and it’s shameful.

But what really left me feeling perplexed was Alia Bhatt winning the Best Actress award for Gully Boy. I mean, she barely had anything to do in the film except act completely cuckoo and borderline criminal. She was abusive and toxic, pretty much like her male counterpart Kabir Singh. Plus, there was no meat in her character or acting. If we despise Shahid Kapoor’s character so much, how can we laugh off Safeena’s violent streak? She smashed a glass bottle on a woman’s head for God’s sake. There’s nothing cute about it. Her role was rather short and I think the other lead in Gully Boy was Siddhant Chaturvedi, who happened to win the award for Best Supporting actor, ironically.

Alia Bhatt won the award despite having Priyanka Chopra nominated for The Sky Is Pink, Vidya Balan for Mission Mangal, Kangana Ranaut for Manikarnika, Kareena Kapoor for Good Newwz and Rani Mukerji for Mardaani 2. What is this sorcery? Even Rangoli Chandel called out Filmfare Awards for this and I am with her on this one!

Bhumi Pednekar and Taapsee Pannu won the Best Actress (Critics) award for Saand Ki Aankh. It almost feels like a favour to give it to actresses who are deserving. Ayushmann got Best Actor critic’s choice for Article 15, while the movie also got Best Film (critics) award. It feels like the critic choice awards were only fair and worth paying heed to.

Gully Boy won 13 awards and with that created a record of winning the most number of Filmfare awards, leaving behind Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherji starrer Black, which had won 11. This has not gone down well with several people and Twitterati didn’t shy away from expressing their displeasure. People have called Filmfare Awards out for being rigged and paid.
