Superhero Behaviour Like Spider-Man Can Help You Stay And Age Healthy, Says Study. Yay!

Spider-Man: No Way Home released in theatres across the country on December 16 and everyone is already heading out to catch this superhero movie. TBH, I am yet to watch it but I know that everybody is already raving about. I mean it is Spidey after all! Superheros really have a special place in our hearts, hai na? Well, what if I told you that they can work wonders for your health too? And no, I don’t mean just watching superhero movies. Like Spidey and other Marvel superheroes, you could also stay fit and healthy if you follow what is being called superhero behaviour.

A new study published in the BMJ journal has analysed the behaviour and lifestyle of several Marvel superheroes and discovered that following their routine can actually lead to positive health outcomes. This study examined the lifestyles including positive and negative behaviours of several Marvel superheroes like Captain Marvel, Captain America, Groot, Thor, Spiderman, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, Black Panther and others.

Noting that the Marvel superheroes are ‘physically active, socially engaged, and optimistic, with high educational attainment and healthy weight’, the study states these traits can be associated with a positive ageing trajectory. The study also stated that there are exceptions to this, namely Thor, who is immortal, and Iron Man who indulges in binge drinking. “With the exception of Thor (whose ageing trajectory will be affected by his immortality), most superheroes do not drink heavily or smoke (Iron Man, who is observed to binge drink, is an exception). Avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol consumption have been associated with longevity and healthy ageing,” reads an excerpt from the study.

The study also factors in the injuries sustained by these Marvel superheroes and their exposure to loud noises and air pollution. It further ran a ‘superhero health check’ to five Marvel superheroes namely Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, Black Panther, and Spiderman. This health check details their health assets like intelligence, superpowers, BMI, socioeconomic status, educational background, family background, psychological status, diet, physical activity, sleep cycle and other such factors. It also notes the health risks involved in the lives of these Marvel superheroes including physical injuries, PTSD, physical traits and characteristics, childhood experiences, exposure to mental and physical illnesses among other things.
