Studies Show That The Coronavirus Has Hit More Men Than Women And Their Lifestyle Might Be To Blame

Here’s the thing, for centuries women have been described as the “weaker sex”. Yes, we are more sensitive, emotional and maybe sometimes we need men to help us move heavy objects. But does that prove that we are the weaker ones? I don’t think so. I have always believed that while men may be physically stronger than us, women are tougher in every other way.

Okay don’t scoff at this thought just hear me out, I have evidence. Unless you’re extremely late to the party, I am sure you have heard of the major outbreak of the Coronavirus that originated in China and has spread to nearly 22 countries. It is a deadly disease that has taken the lives of thousands of people worldwide, not to mention it is highly contagious. But, how does any of this prove women are tougher than men? Allow me to let you in on a little (open) secret.

Last week the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CCDC) published the largest record of coronavirus cases till date. The records showed 44,672 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, 16,186 suspected cases and 889 cases where the carrier of the coronavirus but displayed no symptoms. These are truly horrifying, no doubt.

In these reports, the CCDC also showed that men accounted for 51% i.e. 22,981 of these cases, whereas women accounted for only 21,691 confirmed cases. Long story short, it has been proven that men are more susceptible to this fatal disease than women are. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that this is a good thing because it supports my hypotheses, but the fact of the matter is that it does. My heart goes out to everyone who has been infected by the coronavirus, regardless of their sex.

However, sometimes numbers talk louder than words. These are not unusual statistics, even when there was an outbreak of the SARS and MERS virus, the death rate of men was much higher than that of women. Which brings us to the question, why do these epidemics work so strongly against men as compared to women?

To answer that question perfectly, we need more research to depend on. But from what we have so far, I understand that the answer lies not only in our different genetic dispositions, but it also rooted in varied lifestyles.

Let me start with the biological factor and yes this might sound a little technical. One scientific theory suggests that women get their stronger immune system from the female sex hormone, estrogen. This appears to play a major role in women being less prone to diseases than men. Another factor is that X chromosomes contain immune-related genes and since women carry two of those and men carry only one, women can ward off diseases better than men.

Now onto the lifestyle reasons. The fact that men are way laxer when it comes to their health than women are plays against them. Let me give you a simple example, China has the world’s largest number of smokers and they account for 40% for tobacco consumption worldwide. But there are ten folds more male smokers than women. This puts the male race at a greater risk for respiratory diseases, which FYI is the first symptom of coronavirus.

Men also have higher blood pressure and a lot of them suffer from diabetes, both of which work against them when they have to fight deadlier diseases by increasing the complications. But one of the largest factors is the fact that women are more proactive at seeking help when they think something is wrong with their systems than men are. This the case with practically every man, they think the symptoms will just go away whereas in reality, by not seeking the help they just end up aggravating the disease.

So, there you have it, the reasons that women most definitely can’t be categorized as the “weaker sex” because the truth is both sexes are strong in their own ways.
