Sonam Kapoor Blames Parents For ‘Bois Locker Room’. We Couldn’t Agree More

The ‘Bois Locker Room’ exposé has gained a tonne of traction online in the past few days. While there are still some people using this as an opportunity to slut shame and victim blame, there are several others who have raised their voices in support and even found the confidence to share their own stories. It’s refreshing to see celebrities take a stand for the girls and use their influence to show their support. One such celebrity is actress Sonam Kapoor, who is always unafraid to share her opinions online. She’s received hate for it in the past as well, but that hasn’t stopped her from commenting on this issue.

Sonam took to her Instagram story, saying, “This reeks of entitlement and gross negligence on their parents part. The parents are to be blamed for raising sons who don’t respect human beings and spoiling them. And boys you should be ashamed.”

And we couldn’t agree more! She’s raised an extremely valid point by questioning the parents of these boys. Time and again, we’ve seen clear differences in the way boys and girls are raised in a patriarchal society like ours. Boys grow up with a sense of superiority and entitlement, which is the first step that contributes towards rape culture. It is this kind of an upbringing that is so normalised, we fail to see what’s wrong with it.

Although rape jokes and male entitlement are seen as small and insignificant, they play an important role in enforcing rape culture and encourage the abuse, assault, and disrespect that women face daily. If we are looking at making India a safe place for women in the long run, we need to start tackling this mentality first. And it is not just about raising your children better, but also about setting examples of equality for them. Young boys who see the women around them being belittled and treated as inferior, would naturally grow up to do the same.

Raise your boys to be more respectful, if you want your girls to live without fear.
