Shefali Shah Says She Is In Favour Of Capital Punishment For Rapists Because They Deserve It

Have you watched the Nextflix show, Delhi Crime? It’s based on the gruesome Nirbhaya gang rape case. The show, starring Shefali Shah, had such a huge impact on the audience that it recently bagged an Emmy award for best drama series. The show was extremely hard-hitting and for the longest time, I couldn’t bring myself to watch it. However, when I finally did I wondered whether Jyoti Singh got the justice she deserved. In a recent interview, Shefali Shah says that rapists deserve capital punishment. Do you agree?

If you still haven’t gotten around to watching it, the show Delhi Crime showed the audience how Nirbhaya’s rapists were nabbed and how amid the political pressure and mass protests, it was a woman who was tasked with bringing justice to another woman. In a recent interview with India.com, Shefali Shah, who portrayed the brilliant role of DCP Vartika Chaturvedi, said that she in favour of capital punishment for rapists.

When asked, Shefali said, “Yes. They deserve what they do to others.”

In the same interview, Shefali Shah also spoke about how when she heard someone describing the culprits, she felt this intense surge of anger and wanted to, “tear him apart with my fingernails”. I think we can all relate to her anger, can’t we? Up until the day they were hanged for their monstrous crime, every time I would see them on the news my blood would boil.

She said in the interview, “there was this one moment during the interrogation scene (in which) when I heard the other actors describe the culprit, I wanted to tear him apart with my fingernails. It was like somebody had ‘pulled out my guts’. I was sick and so angry. A lot of people told me that at that moment when I hit that shoe at him and abused him… they said it was like an expression of what they all felt.”
