Saroj Khan Passes Away At 71 But Her Legacy Will Live On With These Iconic Songs

Her moves came doused in nazaakhat as she taught actors to groove to music while emoting. A strict guru and a warm person, Bollywood has been dancing to her tunes for decades while completely being in awe of her. Age used to seem to have defied her as she danced and danced, without a worry in the world. That was veteran choreographer Saroj Khan’s magic for you, which lingers behind in an assortment of songs, especially those of Madhuri Dixit Nene and Sridevi. However, this year has taken another gem away from the world as she passed away on 3rd July due to a cardiac arrest.

What she has left behind for us are the songs she choreographed (nearly 2000) over a span of forty years in Bollywood. Her first independent song was Geeta Mera Naam in 1974 but that was missable. It was 13 years later when she choreographed Hawaa Hawai featuring Sridevi that she was recognised for her work. Come 90s and she took Madhuri Dixit Nene under her wings to train her for most of her songs. Together they gave us songs like Ek Do Teen, Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai, etc. In fact, her last work also was with Madhuri Dixit, it was Tabaah Ho Gaye from Kalank (2019).

The best part about her songs? She didn’t just make their feet dance, but their faces too. Her choreography came with ample scope of facial expressions that made the audiences actually connect to the music. Don’t we all still remember Madhuri’s goofy expressions from Ek Do Teen? Sure, several new choreographers came in. They were younger and brought in a different flavour of zest to the songs. And while Saroj Khan had to take a step back and see others shine too, it never made her work less illuminating. She remained the queen of choreography and will continue to do so, through her songs and our memories of growing up dancing to those! Here are some of our favourites.
