Salman Rushdie’s Response To “Are You A Feminist?” Is Exactly How We Want All Men To Answer The Question!
I am of the opinion that authors and public leaders have the power to sway public opinion. If you look back in history, you will notice that the most prominent leaders have been writers at some point in their lives because words impact people more than anything else. The saying ‘Pen is mightier than the sword’ is indicative of the same as well. And I, being a feminist, always look forward to reading books that either have staunch feminist characters or are written by feminist authors. Well, British-American novelist Salman Rushdie, in a recent interview, was asked if he was a feminist and his response won us over!
Salman Rushdie’s Response To Being Feminist
In a conversation with the New York-based magazine, The Cut, the 75-year-old author offered his views on feminism. The opening line of his answer was no less than a banger as he said yes, he is a feminist and counter-questioned what else can a person be if not one? He further said that being anything other than a feminist is being an ‘assh*le’. Rushdie also talked about how living in a woman-dominated household helped shape his opinions.
The Midnight’s Children author elaborated that he has three sisters and no brother. He also went on to describe them all as ‘strong, opinionated and professional’. He added for his sisters the thought of being at disadvantage in comparison to men just because of their gender was ‘ludicrous’ and also that if anyone tried and suggested that to them, they would have gotten ‘hit’.
